air inserts for your seat

Has anyone seen or know where to buy an air pad that fits the entire seat. Its has baffles alot like a pool float and is about 1" thick.   It has a hand pump that you use to fill the seat to the desired pressure. I saw one somewhere and made a mental note. Bad thing is I cant find that mental note. It must be lost with all of those other mental notes.

Cant help you with the air pad. But if you are looking for a way to add some padding to your seat without adding a lot of thickness I highly recommend Temperfoam. It also goes by the names ConforFoam, Astronaut foam and NASA foam. It was designed by NASA for the Apollo program where astronauts were confined to their seats for extended periods. I've made seat cushions for my airplane and glider out of it. My glider seat is 2" thick and I can sit in it comfortably for 9+ hours at a stretch.

 

 

 

McMaster Carr and Aircraft Spruce and Specialty carry it as do a number of other sources. Not cheap but worth it.

I had purchased some of that tempter foam from Aircraft spruce and used it last year, but it seams to squash flat after a short while. I am using the 2" pad but in my seat there seems to be alot of weight on the tail bone area and that area seems to be what goes away. Of course nothing may be comfortable for 120 hours of driving.

Well never heard of that one before. Sorry it isnt working for you. I wonder if you got a foam of lower density? They are color coded. The ones I've used are green, blue, and pink in order of density with green being the highest. My glider cushion is 1" of green on the bottom with 1" pink on top. The pink crushes, but the green doesnt bottom for me in the glider.

 

 

 

The stuff is heat sensitive so maybe its warmer and less dense in the car? In the glider most of my time is spent pretty high at temps in the 20s - 30s.

I made some seat cushions for the USA tour out of a Memory Foam mattress pad. The material works great and is pretty cheap. I purchased a 2" thick King-sized pad from >Overstock for about $75 including shipping.

However, as John pointed out there are many hi-density foam mattress suppliers that can provide custom-cut foam pieces. I'd stay away from the visco elastic 'tempurpedic' type materials and stick with a dense latex foam myself http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/smile5.gif

My lotus Esprit V8 has the same system. I think the same thing to the 4cyl Esprit & Elises.

'80's toyota celica and supra seats (which are 8 way adjustable) came with a pneumatic lumbar support with 3 separate chambers (which can be set individually). Inflation is via a bulb pump similar to those on blood pressure testing cuffs. I plan on adding this system to my kirkey aluminum driving seat. I can post pictures of the parts if you want an idea of how much work it might take.

Found a pnuematic lumbar support that has a hand buld to pump it up. They were affordable 35.00 dollars. I got them from Flofit.
