What temp should cooling fan come on?

lotus twincam. The gauge only reads to 110 degrees celcius which = 230 degrees fahrenhiet. I have had the car idleing and the gauge is past the half way point at 85 degrees celcius which = 185 degrees fahrenhiet and the fan is still not running at which point i have switched the engine off as to not cause any damage. I checked my miata repair manual and it says the thermoswitch is not activated until 207 degrees farenhiet which = 97 degrees celcius. This temperature seems pretty close to the end of my gauge. Do I need to run it a little while longer to 97 degrees?

Where is the temperatures sender and thermostat?

85-90 is fine for the twin cam, though I've read people that believe lower temperatures (in 70 deg range - Tony Thompson) are better for the twincam. Is your switch out of a miata? I'd suggest getting one with a lower range.

The thermoswitch is in the bottom of the rad. The switch is not from miata, just thought that the temp the fan came on would be similar. I by passed the thermoswitch last night with ignition on and fan came on. Will run the car a little longer tonight and see what happens and check switch for continuity if fan does not come on

trough doctor,

You might want to add a switch to the fan so that you can over ride the thermoswitch if you see that it is getting to hot but the fan has not turn on yet. Only a suggestion but one that I have done with my 7 and I find that I can actually help the cooling system stay cooler by turning the fan on before it gets to hot especially when in trafficand its a hot day outside.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Ran the car this afternoon just idling and temp leveled out at 90 deg. The fan still did not come on. With my other My other 7, the fan comes on as soon as I turn the key. It used to be on a switch but it broke and I just connected the two wires together. No more forgetting to turn the fan on!

If you have the standard 22mm fan switch, there are some alternatives available that have different on and off settings. I would still have an over ride switch as the switches do seem to shoot craps fairly often.

Here's a BC thread with all the common part numbers and temps. http://www.blatchat.com/t.asp?id=130287

Miatas control fan operation from the thermostat housing so the coolant will be much hotter there than in the bottom radiator tank. You either need a different thermoswitch or move the Miata switch to the hot side.
