blubarisax
I'll be at Watkins Glen July 30/31 with the Philly Porsche club (http://rtr-pca.org) They are a friendly group with plenty of non-porsche cars. I like them because they plan their events on the weekends. They have plenty of very fast drivers in the advanced run groups, but the intermediate and beginner groups are quick too. Croc
Doesn't PCA require you to start in novice and work up from there? I think Michael is way too good to go back to being in the novice group.
MichaelD
Yes they do. I am working with the Potomac PCA group to sign off on my advanced status pending confirmation of my advanced status with our local NASA and SCCA officials. The WG PCA event on the 30th doesn't work for me.
blubarisax
Yes, PCA is quite strict about their groups. Even if you are advanced in one region, they don't count that without a written endorsement from your home group's chief instructor. Given how new I am to all this, I'm just as happy to be in the Novice class (green run group). After three events they did sign off on me not needing to have an instructor in the car. It seemed to me that the many of the novice PCA drivers (in their shiny new GT3s) were every bit as quick as the SCDA Intermediate group. I wish I could make the 11/12 SCDA event but I can't get out of the office...
Proj217
If anyone is on the fence about this event and has never been to the Glen, you absolutely have to go. The best track I have ever had the pleasure of taking my car on. The elevation changes and fast pace will keep you smiling all day long.

MichaelD
Hi Guys, Sorry for the silence. The 300 mile drive to WG, the 92+ heat and 5 track sessions and a 300 mile return trip sort of wore me out. :svengo: I drove up on Saturday and found a SCCA Double National event. The answer to "What does a fast Seven turn on WG long course?" is 2:11.4 (a SCCA track record for FP) was set Satuurday by Jerry Henkle in his FP S4 Lotus during qualifying. It was a good event and an amazing facility now owned by NASCAR. During Mondays' SCDA advanced driver sessions slower cars and Black Flags made it impossible to get a clean timed lap. By my fourth session my trans started freezing in fourth gear. By the time I pointed everyone by it cooled down so I could upshift to fifth and catch them only to have it lock in fourth once again. It got bad enough that I decided to skip the fifth session and returned home on Tuesday morning. Would I go again? In a heart beat. It is really, really fun and really fast. It takes alot of heart to not lift, something I did to often. I would love to have clean laps like we did at NJMP. :lurk:I have part of one of my first sessions with 4 Ferrari Challenge cars ready to post but it is 1.85 GB. Please note that I actually passed a red Ferrari 360 right in the begining. I will try YouTube first. Croc
Michael - sorry to hear about the geabox - what did you end up diagnosing the problem as? Nice video - gave a good impression of Watkins Glen. It looks to be one of those circuits which is too fast for a seven as you need top end speed to really make it work. A little too much straight to hang onto the Ferraris. Looks a nice flowing open layout. Although there is not much run off room if someone were to...err...have an "off".
MichaelD
Chip Bond from GT Classics thought it sounded like a loose connecting pin in the linkage. We won't get to it until next week. That was the first half of my first session ever on the track. No instructor preview or anything. You are correct that it is a flat out top speed course. Every time someone went OFF, NASCAR Flagers black flagged all cars to the grid until the car was removed. That ate up allot of time over heated cars and used up fuel. Kitcat
I have signed up for 9/5-9/6 w/Chin Motorsports. Sorry to hear it is a hp/top speed track-I have neither. Everyone who goes there pronounces it their favorite/one of their favorite tracks. I used to drive there and sneak in w/friends when in high school in the early 60's and watch SCCA races and F1. Sort of a home coming in an odd time-warp way. Anyone else interested? Yellow SS/Croc? If I can drive from Cincy, you PA and NY guys can do it! MichaelD
Mike, Just drive the way you drove at NJMP. You won't have any trouble. The S4 that set the SCCA track record had about a 1600 motor as well. Every turn is banked to some degree and many are down hill compression turns to boot. Get an instructor to ride with you on lap one. I did not and regret it. Have fun. Drive fast.
Croc
Anyone else interested? Yellow SS/Croc? If I can drive from Cincy, you PA and NY guys can do it! Hang on....I am not trailering my car like others! :driving: It would be very tempting however that week I am in Europe on vacation. Sorry but I will pass till next time. Kitcat
Mike D.: Chin requires an instructor for everyone new to the track, regardless of experience. And charges $100 extra for the privilege. I plan to get my money's worth. I understand it's a technical track and instructor time can be very helpful. Since it's a 2 day event, I will still have lots of solo time on track. Croc-I know what you mean abt no trailer. Frankly I am wondering how I got 4+ years into ownership w/o one. It has really expanded the number of tracks I can comfortably get to. And it has eliminated the (sizable) fear of being stranded in the middle of nowhere by a mechanical breakdown. I still can, and do, go for blats, use it as a DD in good weather, etc., etc. But, the trailer has added to my overall enjoyment of the vehicle. Of course, finding space to park a trailer/tow vehicle combo across the river from Manhattan is not as easily accomplished as in Cincy (I rented a trailer storage space 2 miles from home for $40/mo). blubarisax
I love my trailer. Croc, I bet you could find a nice spot to park in the back streets of the Greenville section of JC.
Croc
I love my trailer. Croc, I bet you could find a nice spot to park in the back streets of the Greenville section of JC. Are you nuts! It would be graffiti'ed in 5 minutes and torched in 10 minutes! That is still not a nice area of Jersey City. I had a gun pulled on me while driving through that area a year ago.
