MichaelD
I have a spare T-9 out of a Birkin. The Birkin input shaft is a different length than the one used in a Caterham. 1. Does anyone know where I can order the correct imput shaft? 2. Does anyone know which is correct for Caterham? the Long in or Short? 3. What is a good source for T-9 parts and repairs? This information would probably be good to have posted in the site anyway. Thanks for the replies.
jlumba81
For parts source I used http://www.burtonpower.com/ shipping from the UK to Alaska wasn't too bad ($10), but I only ordered a couple speedo seals.
jvbtte
When l got Karl's caterham 6 spd the input shaft had been cut off at the end to fit the shorter bellhousing On the duretek motor I located the correct shaft at caterham UK my car has the ztek motors make sure you order all the e clips as the entire trans will need to be disassemb with the exception. Of the lower gear set Pm me if you'd like. And ill call you As ltd hard to type on this cell phone
Croc
To put Jack's post another way - the Caterham duratec uses the short input shaft for the T9 installation whereas the Caterham Zetec uses the long input shaft configuration on the T9. I assume the Birkin installation follows the same pattern as I believe they use the same bell housing as Caterham. From hearing Jack's pain first hand, the swap over from short to long on the Caterham 6 speed box required disassembly of much of the gear box. His suggestion of a phone call you would find useful as Jack has had his transmission apart more times than anyone else I know! For ordering bits: 1) I second Jude's recommendation of Burton. I have always had good experience with them and their catalog is really good reading. 2) Try Dick Brink. He seems to always have a good supply of Caterham specific parts even though he deals in Birkins. 3) I am sure Jon at Caterham USA (or UK) would have bits. They had a bunch of transmissions on the shelf when I was there a few times this year.
bsimon
I'm not exactly sure what shaft you would need for Duratech or Zetec engines, as there are variations between different installations. I've seen Duratechs with both short and long shafts. There are really only two Ford input shafts available for the Type nine. The short shaft was used in the Ford 4 cylinder applications and the long shaft comes from the V6 cars. Most K-series and VX Caterhams use the long shaft. The third shaft is really the long one with 12-14mm bobbed off the spigot part of the shaft. This modification allows fitting to engines that have a shallow spigot bearing bore in the crank. (some K-series, VX, etc.) The hybrid shaft can be sourced off the shelf from Quaife, or you can bob your own with an angle grinder.
maurice1
Hi guys, www.bghgeartech.co.uk BGH in the UK make a lot of kits for the T9, good quality, excellent pricing compared to Quaife. I have the BGH clubman tall first gear kit in my Birkin 2.0 LT Duratec with a T9 gearbox. I have used it both on the road and track use. RossD
http://www.taylor-race.com/framedmap.cfm?drawing=sierramap&category=Transmissions&subcategory1=Quaife&subcategory2=Quaife%20Parts&subcategory3=Quaife%20Sierra Taylor Race is located in Texas and I've heard good thing about them. They show a 7" input shaft and a 8.25".
