JohnCh
Does anyone have experience with the Ballistic 16 Cell EVO2 lithium ferrous phosphate battery? It's ridiculously light and not that expensive compared to the Odysseys. The 680PCA of the Odyssey PC680 has been overkill for my car, but I’m not sure the EVO2’s 500PCA will be enough. Jim F.
In 3/10 I purchased my Odyssey PC680 for $106.45, the brushed Al. battery box for $32.20, and shipping of $9.87 for a total of $148.52 out of CO. Love that Odyssey! All the power I need for my Caterham.
JohnCh
To make my life easier, the prices quoted above are retail - both brands are available at lower prices, although I don't think the EVO2 discounts are as deep. I’d love to hear from someone who has experience with the EVO2, or has tried one of the lower powered Odysseys such as the PC535 or PC545. I never considered one of those before because the weight difference was pretty minor compared to the PC680, but 12 pounds is substantial. And yes, before anyone mentions it, it would be even cheaper and healthier to remove that amount from my body, but that’s not the purpose of this thread :jester: -John
Sean
Sorry, I have no experience with or knowledge of the Ballistic battery, but thought I would offer an alternative to the PC680. I went with the Odyssey PC625, which has the following specs: Odyssey PC680 625 Pulse Cranking Amps 265 Cold Cranking Amps 18 Amp Hours 13.2 pounds $110 SOURCE: http://www.odysseyfactory.com/documents/US-ODY-RS-006_0209.pdf Higher ratings in most categories than the PC680, weighs two pounds less, and costs less as well. Downside is that there seems to be no off-the-shelf mounting bracket for it, from anywhere, but that's easily remedied. The upside of any Odyssey battery is that they have a proven track record of lasting a good 8-10 years or more in most cases I have heard of or read about (mine is now five years old and going strong). My car came with a PC680 that lasted 2 years from the date of manufacture listed on the battery. I could charge it up and use it for a day but it would go flat with just 2 days in the garage. I understand that if there is any parasitic drain on them at all, they will discharge quickly, and they don't like deep discharges. A battery master switch might solve the problem? (I have a BMS, so zero parasitic load)
danilo
5! years and going 'as new' in my Beater. Clearly YOU have a genuine problem. Battery does have a warantee ? Best to Use it.
JohnCh
Thought I would revisit this thread since I bought the Westfield an EVO2 for Christmas. Before dealing with a permanent install (I plan to change the location so there is some work involved), I wanted to test it's starting power in cold weather to make sure it would meet my needs. It was in the mid 30's when I got home this afternoon, so I temporarily hooked up the battery, rolled the car out of a relatively warm 55F garage, and let it sit in the driveway for over 2-1/2 hours to get properly cold. When I checked back, air temperature had fallen to 31F and according to an infrared thermometer, the battery was also 31F while the engine block had cooled down to slightly warmer, but still chilly 37F. The car started right up. I immediately turned it off, and then repeated that process two more times. So three back-to-back starts with an engine temp in the mid 30's and air and battery temps in the low 30's without any issues. Not bad for a battery that weighs in at 3lb 4.5oz BTW Amazon has it for only $235 including 2-day shipping. -John
TxCoyote
I went with a small Braille battery (about 9 lbs.) in my Stalker. Price was $150 +/- if I remember correctly. More than enough to crank my V6 over and run the accessories. Going on my 3rd year with it so it seems to be holding up well.
