twobone Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I've still got exhaust leaks at the join of the 4 into 1 collector. I'm going to try a pair of motorcycle exhaust T-bolt band clamps and some high temp silicone on each pipe. I wonder though, can a band clamp apply enough pressure to a stainless steel thin wall pipe to improve the seal on a slip joint between 2 pipes? Just curious on the physics.
wemtd Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I'm no physicist. But I cured the same leak with some RTV and nothing else.
twobone Posted May 25, 2012 Author Posted May 25, 2012 Yes, I've been down that road. Hopefully the band clamps will create pressure to stop the vibration that seems to contribute to the breakdown and splitting of the high temp RTV sealant
scannon Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I've had good luck with a 3" wide band clamp that has two hefty bolts to tighten it with. You can see the two bolt heads in the picture and where the band has formed around the two sides of the slip joint. http://www.britishv8.org/Other/SkipCannon/SkipCannon-CB.jpg
JohnK Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 A serious solution: http://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=1022_1125 Also, for shock absorption: http://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=1022_1064 Nice selection of bits: http://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=1022 These are an amateur fabricators things of beauty :-)
ihckb2 Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 here are the vibrant products in action, flex coupling and v-band clamp. I have had no problems.
Canadian 7 Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 "This one time at band clamp...." sorry could not resist!
turboeric Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 "This one time at band clamp...." sorry could not resist! Don't you mean bland camp? No wait, that's where Camry drivers go...
twobone Posted May 28, 2012 Author Posted May 28, 2012 Thanks. part of the problem was finding band clamps that fit the 1.625 inch pipes. I got some that are used on old Triumph motorcycles. The combination of clamps and copper coloured RTV material looks quite "bodged" but if it seals my exhaust, I can live with it. My latest 100 mile test seems to have worked.
JohnK Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Exhaust sealing stuff: wurth makes an exh joint sealer thats held up well in the 500 miles I've put on it so far - no puttering, hissing sounds that I can detect. Also Flexbar handles a refractory cement that, together with crimp -on band clamps, is holding up on the header-cyl head flange where it's keeping the exh wrap secured.
Canadian 7 Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 As far as the Vibrant Performance referral, I have 2 of their resonators on my SRT-4 and they make a great product! Ron.
ihckb2 Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 The two resonators that show in the pic are Vibrant. Some people think the first one is cat converter. The systems is nice and mellow when you are just cruzing around but once the revs are up 3000 then it gets loud. At 7000 to 8000 it is piercing. I have been told not to come back to the autocross untill I stuff the system with something.
lgb240 Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Princess Auto sells st.steel band clamps in their hydrolic section. The clamps uses a nylock nut, so be sure to double nut it to keep it tight as the nylon melts away. I used them on my Caterham and am very pleased - spent about $4.00 total for 2 clamps Good luck lgb240
