California registration issues

Recommended Posts

Josh who bought my black Ultralite is having a hell of a time getting it registered in CA. For some reason since the Tx title doesnt say kit car or assy car they cant register it. It has Ultralite as the make and S2k as the model. Can you other Ultralite owners look at your titles and see what they say. PM me if you dont want to post it here. He has been round and round with them for 3 months now.

Where in CA? He will probably need to trailer it to the DMV and show it to them to prove it is a specialty construction vehicle, he needs to ask for an SB1578 (SB100) exemption.

I had a similar problem because the NJ title code for specialty construction was what CA considers a reconstructed vehicle, so I had to show my car to the DMV and they changed the paperwork

I just registered mine last month and the process went smoothly. I had a Indiana title as an Ultralite S2K as well. Ca. is probably the only state that has so many categories for classifying motor vehicles. Prior to registering my S2K, I used a cheat sheet from a Cobra site that ran down the particulars pretty well. When applying for the registration, the vehicle should be registered as a speciality constructed vehicle or, what Ca DMV calls a SPCNS. Ca DMV does not give a year designation to these vehicles and applies a 00 year. I brought a flyer that shows the vehicle as a kit and explained that it would fall under the SB100 exemption even though it had already been titled otherwise. At the CHP inspection they will verify that it is a kit vehicle. I never had to take the car down to the DMV.

Is it any wonder that CA is so screwed up and nearly bankrupt? If they can't handle the miniscule fraction of cars like this without a bureaucratic tangle, think of how they manage something of significance...like our budget.

Makes me shy away from claiming my 6th generation "native Californian" heritage.

Think I'll go out, climb in my 7 and break a few speed limits!:hurray:

Have Josh go to the Los Gatos DMV ONLY!! I got totally screwed at San Mateo and almost gave up before I was told on line by a Cobra Club member to go to Los Gatos and ask for "the Kit Car lady only" when you check in. She was a really on top of it and had to spen an hour on the phone to Sacramento head DMV office undoing all the San Mateo screw ups. Really don't remember her (kit car lady) name and the girl at the counter didn't know what I was tyalking about because she was new but as soon as she asked a more seasoned employee I was sent to the back of the building to see the right person and came out all smiles and with a whole new attitude about the DMV. LOL.

It is because they only have to deal with a minuscule fraction of cars like this that not too many people know how how to deal with it. Most DMV's have never even had to do an SB100 registration, you can't expect them all to be experts on the subject.

If you want to do something outside the norm, it is up to you to do your due diligence on the subject.

I've had nothing but great experiences at the CA DMV

Just to keep it straight I had the cheat sheet at the San Mateo DMV and they told me all kind of crap even after I showed them what to do. Told me all the "web stuff" was wrong even though it was dead on. Told me it couldn't qualify for SB100 and that only one day a year was open for that anyway, all incorrect info from them, clear up through three levels of "stupidervisors". San Jose CHP office on Zanker road was great, only a fwe minutes of paperwork and asked me just where I wanted the new CA ID number decals and plate installed, my choice.

Went to the DMV in the nearby small town of Shafter. They were great. Bakersfield's big DMV didn't seem to want to be bothered, told me things that weren't correct... even after showing them what others had done (internet).

Everyone has a bad day, but it's definately worth shopping around DMVs, especially if referenced by another peer.

Thank you for all of your replies and help, I finally found an intelligent soul at the DMV office today (after I had the CHP do a VIN verification) and now I am in line for a SPCNS number... only catch was the lady could not get the Sacramento office on the phone cause they were out to lunch... so back one more time tomorrow to get the SPCNS number issued then I'm making my State Ref appointment and getting this baby legal!!!

I cant wait to be through this process... at least after its over it is smooth sailing from then on.

With so many illegals in California, who would notice one itty bitty Lotus ? I know, here in Florida, I think our "legal" population is a minority. One store had a sign in the front saying "Se Habla Everything". Good luck with the car.

Well, considering the taxes I pay, the salaries and benefits they get, I expect them to go get someone in the office who does know the ropes, or will at least pursue the matter in a professional manner. It's all about attitude and "customer service" (DMV may be a requirement, but we are still customers), and while there are good DMV experiences, most I have had were barely tolerable.

I recently took all the pages and forms from the DMV website re: YOM license plates and even with that in hand for the clerk to reference they couldn't handle it without a minor snit.

No one would put up with that in a "real" business, why should we accept it from a government entity? If you have had nothing but great experiences at your DMV office, congratulations. Tell us where it is so we can go there.:hurray:

While I am sure the entire $1 (if that) of your taxes that went towards the DMV payroll entitles you to special privileges, I kind of figured that wasn't going to be the case for me (I only paid $.50).

I asked around first, and despite having a DMV literally a mile down the road from me, I drove 40 miles each way to a DMV with a "Kit Car Lady". And even she had to look things up in the book. She was great though, after seeing the car and declaring it "awesome" she gave me a 6 month temp permit (which is unheard of and no longer allowed) to use the car since I had to wait that long until Jan 2nd.

If you had a rare medical condition wouldn't you seek out a specialist rather than going to a general practitioner?

I also think a lot to do with how well a visit to the dmv goes is dependent on ones own attitude too

BTW, the average DMV employee salary is $37,000 (factoring in management) and I believe some of the people who work the front desks don't get much more than minimum wage, so not exactly attractive to the cream of the crop ;)

Dana Point in South Orange County specializes in SB 100 vehicles. There are a few Cobra manufactures down there and they process them frequently. The brake and light inspection is a pain in the rear as a reverse light must be hooked up and you must have a functional parking brake. The BAR was the easiest part of the process. They just looked at the car and asked how I wanted to have the car smoked. "BY BODYSTYLE, SIR!" And when asked, I said it was a replica of a 62 Lotus 7. He agreed and I didn't have to pay a single cent. :auto:

I think I had the easiest brake/light inspection from what I hear.

The guy stood in front; headlights=check, blinkers=check, horn=check... to the rear; brake lights=check, blinkers=check.

Here's your paperwork. Ten minutes total.
