My wife and I are planning to circle Lake Superior in our StalkerV6 this summer. Most likely we will enter Canada at Sault St. Marie and Back into the US at Grand Portage. We will be camping with a small motorcycle trailer in tow.

My concern is that my car is registered in Minnesota as a "Collector" vehicle. Does anyone know if this will be an issue when I try to cross the border? Or will it be a case of: As long as I have registration and insurance they won't care what type of plates it has.

Thanks!

I would not think it would matter as you could be going to show it or just out enjoying your collector car on your vacation. Call AAA and ask them as they would most likely know or be able to tell you who to ask.

Have fun on your trip and post some photos as you go for all of us that have to work or can not convince the other half that a 7 would be fun on a trip of that distance.

Going into Canada and back to US won't be a problem. Just don't have anything close to a weapon, including pepper spray, or items intended for sale. And be sure to have your passports.

Enjoy the drive.

Passports, Proof of insurance and vehicle registration is all that's needed. There's a list of prohibited items that a quick internet search will pull up. I went thru Canada 3 times in the past 15 months and didn't have any issues. They didn't even bother searching the car since there's not much room to smuggle anything. One thing to check on is the border crossing times. Some places are 24 hrs but others close in the evening. Also avoid truck routes or carry a lot of extra gas cause there won't be many gas stations. I carried two 2.5 gal cans and a 2 gal can. You might want to get a gas can extension tube or a funnel to make roadside fill ups easier. So don't forget to bring tire change tools. I forgot mine on the last trip but luckily didn't get a flat.

Brent,

I have driven back and forth over the border to many times to count and never had a problem. Do not have any weapons of any kind, declare everything you should (Booze etc). I have never been asked for registration (they know if it is registered and who too as they have camera's looking at every angle of the vehicle and computers checking all kinds of items (including if you have a record or outstanding warrants etc).

As it has been said make sure you have your passports (you can even get a passport for a dog or cat if you have one with you) LOL!!!

Have a good trip,

Fantastic, Thanks everyone. Great advice. I've started looking at the border web sites and requirements. As we already have passports, I'm not expecting it to be too bad.

Part of how we plan to make it work is to force the whole trip into 9 days... works out to only about 125 miles/day average... It'll be a struggle to travel at that slow a pace, but the goal is to enjoy the time camping and exploring, not rush from point to point.

R.E. the wife and the 7, I gave her a choice: motorcycle or Stalker. For some reason she didn't choose the motorcycle.... LOL! Truth be told, she actually wants to do this more than I do.

Brent,

Sounds like an awesome trip. I know you and Brenda will have a blast. Be safe and keep a log to share with the group. I know Brenda will have her camera.

You will probably have a harder time getting back into the US than into Canada.

Don't take back to US any hollow chocolate goodies with toys in them, or you will end up in jail for sure, they are illegal in US.
