scannon Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 (edited) This video is of commercial fishing boats coming back from fishing out off the coast of Washington & Oregon. They are crossing the Columbia Bar, which is where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. http://www.youtube.com/embed/ByGSMmenPDM?rel=0 This is where the Columbia River meets up with the Pacific Ocean. This is designated as one of the most dangerous ports of entry anywhere in the world. There are at least 8 to 10 deaths per year with dumb ass people trying to get in or out in boats that are not made for this kind of severe beating that you see these boats going through. These boats are self-righting, super low center of gravity, sealed engine compartments, basically bullet proof glass windows, double steel hulls. Well, you get the idea. They are commercial shrimp and fishing boats. I have actually seen it so bad that the Coast Guard has closed it due to waves of 35 to 45 foot. It is quite a sight to see. Watch the U-tube video and tell me if you would like to have been a crew member on either of these 2 boats. Edited February 23, 2013 by scannon
xcarguy Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 My top five thoughts: • Are these shrimp boats or submarines • Now I know why the shrimp plate at the local Flying Burger restaurant is $15.50 • I always wondered where the footage for 'The Perfect Storm' was shot • Here, hold my beer and watch this and • $15.50 a plate 'ain't' enough
DeanG Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 In 2011 we drove our 1991 Lotus Elan (M100) from VA to LOG 31 in Las Vegas via the West Coast. The first 3 photos are from the OR state park at the mouth of the Columbia River. Further down the coast we saw this Tsunami warning sign (as if all the official a much bigger impact than the official warning signs). Finally from the Umpqua_Lighthouse we watched the Coast Guard train in the waves. An excellent training site. Almost standing waves, yet a bit to one side or the other it was calm. Anyone considering going to the WCLM - West Coast Lotus Meet should consider the coastal route.
