Caterham Muffler = Glass pack?

Recommended Posts

I have a 1998 kit super sport, can someone tell me if the stock muffler is a glass pack? The car had 1800 miles when I bought it, now has 3200. I swear it's much louder now than when I got it, the resonation in the around town driving range of 2000 to 3200 rpm vibrates your head! Am I imagining this?

My hearing was damaged long ago from other life experiences so this really gets old quickly, Ear plugs seem to make it worse, doesn't block the low pitch.

Thanks

I always used foam ear plugs and ear muffs when I drove my '97 X-flow Cat. If I still had it I wld substitute headphones and my I-Pod (keep the foam plugs and crank it up). Also had the side benefit of eliminating my perception of all those worrysome rattles and squeaks coming from everywhere:).

Your description of the decibel increase points to a glass pack.

Your options are to source a rebuildable unit from the UK.

I went cheap(er) with a Magnaflow and it does not get any louder with use, but was too loud to start with.

I'd recommend a repackable replacement that uses stainless steel wool.

There are some discussions on silencers elsewhere in this forum.

Side Exhaust, thinking on trying rear exit but wonder if there will still be the resonation noise at the muffler or only at the exit?

Thanks

I had my exhaust modified to move the exit to behind the rear wheel and point to the curb. It seems to have lowered my preception of sound level. If you're going to get things worked on, fresh parts should help.
