RST-V8 by The Adrenaline Gallery

Recommended Posts

I believe that is the super wide-track aftermarket suspension that used to be available for the S3, from a supplier in UK.

The rear deDion set-up is taken from the SV.

Sean on this list has a similar set-up on his S3, but i believe without the extra-wide rear wings

How does the Hartley V-8 compare to the RST V-8 in (1) power; (2) weight; (3) dimensions; (4) price; and (5) availability?

Anyone know off-hand?

Also, i believe there is an RST V-6 that has been developed, or is under development right now.....

I can assemble some objective information comparing the two engines. They are both great. However there are a few reasons why we made a conscious decision to invest in the RST-V8.

As far as availability, The Adrenaline Gallery is working with RS Performance, so these engines are now much more easily available in the US. Once you move past availability, the next - very real - challenge is implementation. We're working to overcome this and make the components available in a "kit" form so that this power plant can be as plug and play as possible - still with room for individualization.

The EVO V6 engine IS available and actually has been installed in a s3 Caterham. I have an iPhone video I will work to upload. While crude, you can still see the supercharged low-sitting 120ºV in all it's awesomeness shine thought. More to come on that front (I'll start another thread, in time).

Stay tuned...

I believe that the inboard suspension and *maybe* wide-track front suspension was engineered by the no longer in business Freestyle. I seem to remember that these components can still be sourced, however. I'm not all that knowledgeable beyond this information, but remember Sean showing me his setup at the S. CA Mt. Palomar assault. What's not to like about an inboard suspension S3? :)

Alaskossie...

Article was from '09.

Wonder what the latest would be...still running? Further developments? Latest project?

Sure glad he doesn't live close to me: I get enough grandiose ideas without help from someone of his ilk!

He sure does nice work though...

The inboard front suspension, as found on the CSR chassis, was developed by Multimatic under contract to Caterham.

Take a good look at the angularity of the coil-overs on that front suspension in the photo. Not something to strive for.

An interesting article on a RST V8-engined Caterham SV from evo magazine in the UK (2004 September): here

Another article on the Freestyle super-wide 7 from the same magazine (2005 January): here

Bruce - Pretty sure the dampers were fitted there as a temporary solution to make the the start of the USA 2005 tour. Obviously not optimal, and he fitted the full inboard system soon after, I believe.

edit --

Alaskossie - Rear wings are pretty wide, at +55mm wider than standard, as opposed to Mike's RST car which has a 2-inch alumin(i)um spacer between the body and the standard width wing. Gotta cover the extra width of the SV deDion tube one way or another:

The rights to the Hartley H1 were sold in 2012. The H1 used to be a value compared to the RST-V8, being US sourced, now it is considerably more expensive and does not come with a Caterham-specific package.

H1

  • 2.8L 75° V8
  • 84mm Bore X 63mm Stroke
  • 4 cam, 32 valves chain-drive
  • 530mm wide x 485mm long x 530mm high
  • 400HP @ 10,000 rpm
  • 245 ft-lbs torque @ 7500 rpm
  • 200 lbs engine weight
  • Billet flat-plane crank
  • Dry sump 0il system with 4 stage pump

RST-V8

  • 2.4L 90º V8
  • 78mm Bore X 69mm Stroke
  • 4 cam, 40 valve belt-drive
  • 552mm wide x 550mm long x 450mm high
  • 400HP @ 10,000 rpm
  • 200 ft-lbs torque @ 7800 rpm
  • 163 lbs engine weight
  • Billet flat-plane crank
  • Dry sump 0il system with 5 stage pump

Hopefully that side-by-side proves insightful.
