Looking for pictures of a Turbo Duratec

I might be getting a 2014 Turbo DI 2.0 Duratec. I remember seeing some pictures of an install in I think a Caterham. In stock form the inlet port points back at the firewall, and this install used a air/water intercooler. I have looked everywhere for the pictures and cannot find them, if anyone has the link please let me know.

Great, that was not a picture I had seen before, so it's a bonus, I think the pictures I remembered was of a yellow car. But this will help a lot. I wonder were the radiator is for the intercooler.

The header tank is right there between the head and the intercooler, there is an electric pump in line , we are now running a stand alone ECU and I've moved the battery to the rear to free up a little space. System works really well, I'm only pushing 7 lbs of boost, I think if I got chance to drive the car more frequently I might run a touch more boost but as it is we are producing 320+ whp, which is plenty.

Thanks for the info. So you don't run it through a radiator? My car will be running track days so I am worried about building heat during a session. Have you done any events in your car or just road driving. I think the stock boost level in this engine is 14 psi, but it is a low compression turbo engine.

Sorry, I don't think my reply was clear. You'll need a radiator to cool the intercooler liquid or you'll be fighting a very short battle. That sounds like a lot of boost, I'm running low comp forged pistons, I'd be surprised if at a full bar of boost you haven't got some serious turbo lag other turbo / light car issues. If I dialed up 14 psi we'd be pushing 400hp out of a not particularly desirable torque curve. There are a lot of optimistic numbers spread around particularly with turbo cars, be sure of what you're actually getting. Which caterham are you intending to put this motor in?

Where did you put the radiator, all the way down in the nose? 14 pound boost is pretty conservative, I used to run 14 pounds boost in my Miata with stock compression. But I am looking at the stock Ford power curve, very flat torque curve. This is a stock motor out of a 2014 Focus ST. Probably something like this.

Graham,

Are you going to use a duratec or ecoboost? The ecoboost has VVT which will have a very positive influence on the TQ curve.

 

What transmission will you use?

I definitely look forward to seeing this come together. I've gone down the path of using the GM 2L Ecotec turbo because I felt it was easier. Have you found a dry sump pan and bell housing that will work? For the GM I was able to find a bell housing that is "close" and am having a machine shop do the necessary modifications. Ford Racing told me the ecoboost used a different sump and bell housing than the duratec which makes getting everything bolted together tricky.

 

The reason I asked about the transmission is most street cars have a relatively tall 1st gear for what you need in a caterham. The Miata 5-spd is one of the longer ones at 3.163, but it's still quite a bit shorter than what you see in most transmissions used in a Caterham (~2.4-2.7).

 

I am just a bench racer at this moment so take my comments for what they are worth. If you have found the way forward with this engine I would consider changing my path...

Graham, I'll send you a pic of the intercooler radiator when I see the car next week. If you search on this site you'll find one of my dyno sheets on here that shows us @ 320+ whp and a nice flat curve at around 7/8 lbs, hence my question at 14 psi you would be either producing a ton of power (probably sacrificing a little curve) or there's something else not right. The car in the link isn't a Caterham and that's not a duratec, however if you search around there's a few pictures of a guys supercharged duratec ( Birkin or Locost? Can't remember but it's yellow) that he's got a front mount air to air that's a beautiful piece of work. Never quite sure about the effectiveness of double stacking radiators, someone smarter than me will have to answer that question. You're always going to be fighting a traction battle because of the torque produced which is one of the other reasons for not getting too wild with the boost, I can break traction in the first five gears, we are working on the boost by gear mapping now.

Turbowood. I don't think the bellhousing bolt pattern is different from a Duratec. We have one of these motors already and I am sure they are running a Duratec bellhousing. But I will check. We have someone that can make sumps, but I will try and get a Redline sump from the UK if it will fit.

This isn't a Duratec but it may give some ideas. It is a GM Ecotech from a Pontiac/Saturn Soltice/Sky and it is in a Stalker, which I realize is a larger vehicle.

There is a lot of confusion so I phones Race Line in the UK http://www.raceline.co.uk/ The Ecoboost and Duratec have the same bellhousing and sump bolt pattern They make a bellhousing to get to a T9, but in the US the Miata NC transmission on either 5 or 6 speed in the ticket. The Direct Injection is the biggest issue, there is little or no aftermarket support at present, so the stock ECU is probably the only way to go at this point in time. The stock ECU is a CAN Bus ECU with security features, so that route is probably not as simple as it sounds. The advent of the 2015 Turbo RWD Mustang is going to change the market in the US but it's a little to late to help me.
