Jerry I am running the RC Engineering 650cc injectors. With the AEM we can change nearly all aspects of the tune. I know that timing and vtec movement is a big advantage. We will be trying to do some launch control stuff too. You can program the ecu to limit rpm until certain speed is reached. That was at the drags you can floor it and it will only go to 4k rpm until 15 mph is reached it will then start to dial in full power as you go. It will help get the car out of the hole (hopefully) It should be a real rush. I think I should be able to get in mid 11s on street tires if all goes as planned. With slicks i think we will be in the 10s. Thats pretty quick for a non drag car. It has been tough getting all that stuff in there. The supercharger and intercooler fit fine its finding room for the spare water resivoir fluid pump and second radiator that is the challenge. I worked on it for 22 hours yesterday and got alot done. I got the car started and the master cylinders changed out. I still need to swap diffs. bleed brakes install new pads. install sway bar and fab some brackets for that make a new battery mount and get it all ready to go to the dyno on the Wens. I just hope that I havent overlooked something small. I will shoot some video when we make some dyno runs and post it on the site.
-
No Jerry the only thing I had to do was notch part of the braket where the front diagnal support is. Everything else looks like it should fit. It just clears the hood with a 3/16 to spare. The little radiator that is for the intercooler will have to be mounted on the bottom there is no room in the front for it. But I am putting a 1650 cfm 10" fan on it for cooling. Dyno tuning next week. Hope it all works out like I expect.

Getting ready for the One Lap of America next month. We decided to do a power up grade. We went the Vortec supercharger with aftercooler that is designed for the S2000 engine. We are going to be running 9 pounds of boost and this is all controlled with AEM programmable ecu. Hope to get about 130 hp increase with the combination. http://www.usa7s.com/forum/uploads/20070410_183254_DSC01550.JPG

Although sizes vary from one company to the next, each company usually has ways to measure your head to size their helmets. I bought a really nice M2000 helmet on ebay that was a new discountinued model that normally sold for 400.00 I paid 60.00. Most DE weekends and Autox will let you run with a M model helmet. If you do get into wheel to wheel then most require an SA rated helmet. But there is plenty of them on ebay too. With the event still a few months out you have a little time to look around and find a good deal. I only looked at full face helmets but there are alot of open face helmets that are very reasonable.

I found this insurance on the the One Lap of America web site. This is a British insurance company that covers cars that are driven on the track. I sent in the form for the a quote, havent gotten it back yet but others may want to check it out. You could have your coverage that covers the car on and off the track. http://www.onelapofamerica.com/whatsNew/index.shtml?0121[/url]

I have my insurance thru State Farm. It is an agreed value coverage 30k no limit on mileage. I do have my home and other auto insured thru them. I know you have to have other insurance with them for them to cover a kit car. They don't like it much, but will for thier customers. I think I pay 580.00 a year for full coverage.

Took Frankn7 out for a ride today
WestTexasS2K replied to slngsht's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Yeah bring that beast to Run and Gun. I am anxious to see that monster in action on the track. If you wait till everything is perfect you will never make it to the event. Get it safe and reliable and let it rip. -
Man that car is sounding good. A BEC is hard to beat. I think that the twintech with a hyabusa engine and a IRS diff would be a neat combination. http://www.kitcarmag.com/featuredvehicles/0607kc_twintech_v_twin_kit/

I have run NASA, Apex driving, Drivers Edge programs all DE stuff and it is basicly run was you brung. They put in group according to driving skill regaurdless of how fast the car is. Now these are all Drivers Education programs not actual wheel to wheel racing. Now if you want to race there may not be a catagorey that your car fits into for some of the organizers. I know NASA has the 7s challange series. They race in group of other race cars but position is just between the 7 drivers. I have talked to some of the Driving schools because I had heard the same rumor that you had that they would not allow open wheel cars. But this pertained mostly to the Ariel Atom because the driving wheels are not covered by a fender. If contact were to occur then it could cause a car to get launched. But they said no problem with the 7 type cars as long as they had fenders.

came across this video of a V8 BEC based car doing an autocross. http://media.putfile.com/Caterham-V8

While agree it is nice to expand on what you have it doesnt seem to make sense to spend alot of money on a motor to drive for a short while. Then turn around and spend another chunk of money on making it faster. IMHO buy it fast and use the right foot to get use to the power. Just because you have 240hp nothing says you have to use it. The one thing about the honda is just keep it under 6k and it drives like a honda civic. Over 6k it turns into another monster. Just my 2C.

Well don't know if I can add anything to what has been posted. I just tell you what made my mind up. I chose the Ultralite for multiple reasons. I bought the book Lotus 7 and the independents. I looked at all the cars and read all the comments. .I bought the Ultralite because. 1. it came in kit form and I wanted to build my own. 2. I went for a ride and was sold by the shear velocity that the car could generate in such short order. I had a grin on my face for a week afterwards. ( and I have had some pretty fast cars) 3. Car was built in Texas. 4. The high quality of the parts that were standard on the car. All are readily available in the U.S.A. . 5. The Honda engine is just unbelievable. I dont think any other manufacturer can get the performance from 2.0 with the same reliability. 240hp at 9000 rpm is just a pure mechanical symphony. I absoulutely run the snot out of my car and have only had to change the oil a few times. I did replace the plugs with Iridium units but didn't have to. 6. I prefered the looks of the shorter nose and cowl bumps on the hood over the long skinny nose of the more original looking kits. To be honest I did not know what a lotus 7 was before seeing the Ultralite in kit car magazine. 7. The total cost to build was similiar if not cheaper than alot of the other kits out there. I know alot of the Ztec engines make good power and can be pumped up to substantial levels, but with alot of money just to get it to the point the Honda is out of the junk yard. The huffed v6 in the superstalker is very fast and I am sure the v8 versions are faster yet. The TOTD would be an excellent oppurtunity to get a look at a wide range of vehicles and I am sure a test ride in everyone will be possible. I would encourage you to do a track weekend with the cars when you can. I recommend this for several reasons. The first is that it is just about as much fun as you can have with your close on. (and almost tied with the clothes off option). It will also teach you how learn the car limits in a safe area. You will be amazed at what these little cars can do. (You will piss some people off with really expensive cars when you continually pass them on the track.) You will gain a vast amount of car control. This will save you from getting yourself in a bad situation that the cars can put you in. Happy hunting hope that you find the car that is right for you and your intended purpose. Any question is just a short email away from the helpful folks here. I would have liked to have had this wealth of info when I started my project.WestTexasS2K2007-02-11 16:10:29

I had purchased some of that tempter foam from Aircraft spruce and used it last year, but it seams to squash flat after a short while. I am using the 2" pad but in my seat there seems to be alot of weight on the tail bone area and that area seems to be what goes away. Of course nothing may be comfortable for 120 hours of driving.
-
Has anyone seen or know where to buy an air pad that fits the entire seat. Its has baffles alot like a pool float and is about 1" thick. It has a hand pump that you use to fill the seat to the desired pressure. I saw one somewhere and made a mental note. Bad thing is I cant find that mental note. It must be lost with all of those other mental notes.
-
Congrats on the car. Its really nice to see peoples dreams come to life. I can see the pride on your face. I agree with RV-4. Nothing beats the sound of a BEC. Now hurry up and finish it and set the streets on fire.

Thanks for the help I cant seem to get things to post for some reason. I tried to copy and paste the page but it left the charts and drawing off. Thanks for doing the link.

Quick Release Steering Wheel
WestTexasS2K replied to solder_guy's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I prefer the splined quick release over the hex shaped one. The Hex shaped ones i have seen tend to have a little play in them. The hex ones fit tighter. -

slnsht could you post some pics of the engine compartment with the v8 installed. I always thought the LSI and TKO tranny would be a nice combination. -
Anyone using inboard rear brakes?
WestTexasS2K replied to slngsht's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Yeah Chuck and others are right about the R160 but it handles the s2000 power well and has a wide selection of gears and lsd is easy to find. You get all this in a 50lb package that can be found on cars from 89-2003 and can pick them up for 75.00 or less in most cases. If you up the power to the 300hprange the R180 will handle it. But the STI diffs are going for 1K and has a 3.90 and thats it. Aftermarket ratios are hard to find and if you do come across them will add another 500.00 plus set up to the tab. Also available in 240-260z cars but they do not have the lsd. After that the R200 is the next step those are found in 280z from 76-89 but lsd are hard to find and Quaife is the only aftermarket that I know of that has an lsd they run 1500.00+ . The 240sx has alot of r200 lsd with a 4.11 ratio that are cheap and readily available but they are of the short nose variety. The next big daddy R230 from the 90 and up 300zx will handle about 700hp and are of the short nose variety. Has a few gear ratios to choose from and lsd are plenitful. These are also found in the Infinity Q45 as well. These units weight about 85lbs. Learned most of this stuff from putting V8 in Datsun Z cars for several years. There is alot of info on www.hybridz.org . You can literally spend days going thru all the post. The Supra IRS and Mazda RX7 Turbo cars also have good IRS units they will handle high power loads. Another diff. that get over looked but is a good choice is the corvette C4 units. It is all aluminum. it has a large mustache bar intergral to the unit with a rear toe adjustment and 4 drag links that are refered to as dog bones due to their shape. They will handle large horsepower and are reasonable priced fairly light weight and has large disc brakes all included. Gear ratios are bad 2.73-3.27 mostly but are available in just about anything you like. If I were to build the Locust I might give this unit a hard look. It would be easy to set up can be narrowed by 12-14 inches to fit you chassis. It is very easy to convert to coil over shocks too. That my 2 cents.WestTexasS2K2007-01-20 08:32:37 -
That looks like a cool toy. You will have the best of both worlds. A cool seven and a cool plane.
