  1. Man, don't hold this against me. The order form doesn't have a Stone Wash Option. I have to admit I was influenced somewhat by your car when I decided to pick bare aluminium. It'll just take awhile to look like yours. And it sounds like, if I use cable ties to attach the wings, then they will look like yours quicker! :leaving:
  2. Awesome! If we can get more than five to show up, then I'll have it catered! I would rather offer copious amounts of beer, but of course everyone who shows up will be a self-designated driver!
  3. Thanks! Got the 41mm socket from Northern Tool. Only $5 and free shipping! :hurray:
  4. Thanks, all for the support. :flag: The 41 mm socket and 200 ft./lb. torque wrench are for the rear wheel hubs.
  5. Thanks, Mazda. Trying very hard to have everything ready by the first or second weekend in February.
  6. There is a that time in every Caterham assembler's journey when it is necessary to beg for tools and assistance. Please PM me with your email address if you 1. Can loan a 41 mm socket and 200 lb torque wrench. 2. Can loan an engine stand and/or hoist. (I have a garden trailer to haul these with.) 3. Want to be present to wrestle the engine into the chasssis in February. First try, anyway. Thanks, Harold
  7. I don't really mind bonding the wings on. Plenty of people say it works well. My question then becomes: What happens if a wing gets broken and needs to be replaced? Can the epoxy be removed from the wingstay, or does the wingstay nee to be replaced? Regarding the "proper clamshells", I just like the look of the cycle wings.
  8. I'm begining to see the merits of bonding or screwing. The idea of using gear clamps (hose clamps?) instead of plastic ties seems like a vast improvement. Maybe the clamps could be screwed or bonded to the wingstay?
  9. Nice looking car! http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/14391027_No53.jpg
  10. There are several methods for attaching cycle wings. The standard method requires holes drilled through the fibreglass. Some say this can weaken the wing and may look less tidy. Another method is to bond the fibreglass directly to the metal wingstays. This method makes it difficult to remove the wings in the future. I'm considering a third method using cable ties. Mounts are bonded directly to the wing. Rubber is used between the mount and the wingstay. What do you think? http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/691357621_WeldMount.JPG http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1107487624_WeldMountsOnWings.JPG http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1441819728_WeldMountsInstalled.JPG Cable tie mounts are available from marine suppliers, like http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=6436&familyName=Weld+Mount+Footman+Strap+Mount
  11. Gary, Congrats and welcome aboard. Maybe we can blat with the other NOVA seven guys. You are welcome to buzz up to Eldersburg (probably in February) when I drop the engine in mine. Would love to see your car. See you around! Harold
  12. Thanks for all the quick feedback. I ended up dropping the diff and attaching the propshaft on the ground. It's tight, but the whole thing goes in from the rear. Two lessons learned. 1. It goes get easier when you've done it before and 2. That first cold beer of the day sure tastes good!
  13. After several painful hours I got the differential hung. Unfortunately I failed to understand the significance of the line above that said "lay the propshaft in the transmission tunnel". :ack: Now I cannot seem to get the propshaft into the tunnel. I'm thinking it goes in through the opening that is blocked now by the differential. What would you do?: A. Bite the bullet and reinstall the differential. B. Take the propshaft apart at the universal joint, and try to reassemble the universal joint in the tunnel. If you were Mazda you would C. cut out the transmission tunnel, but that is not an option here.
  14. I'm getting more like 6 mpg. :nonod:
  15. Mazda, this looks like an awesome Christmas present for your brother. http://www.californiacaterhamclub.com/chat/showpost.php?p=6631&postcount=4 http://s26.photobucket.com/albums/c127/TheLyinKing1/Dax%20Rush%20Lotus/ After his work on your car is done, of course.
  16. Honestly, the "anti cavitation" was my term, trying to descibe something I know nothing about. The motor is a Zetec. I told Caterham I would bring up the topic again when I am close to installing the motor. I am hopeful the rest of the build will be more seemless. :_deadhorse:
  17. I thought you were right on the money with this one, but here is the official word from US Caterham. I'm sure it will be crystal clear when I get the engine in there.:ack: Thanks again for all the help.

    retired today

Congrats on your early retirement, and thanks for your service as a fireman. There was one occasion where I had to call on the local volunteer fire department, and I swear I could hear the sirens before I hung up. I'm sure you were equally impressive at times. Enjoy your car and find something else meaningful. (Like maybe helping me on my build. :banghead:)
  19. The fuel filler cap that came with my Caterham kit is a cheap-looking black plastic cap from a Rover. I already hit it once with the buffer and it looks dull. :banghead: Does anyone know of a chrome or aluminum cap available? :bigears: (I'd rather not have to install the Race Filler option that bolts into the body.)
  20. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/245925658_steeringwheel.JPG Caterham shipped this...uh, the wheel, not the kid. https://www.caterhamparts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=117_118&products_id=308&osCsid=994e69b2d02dc471744ec870833ed50a
  21. If the Seven were a politician it'd be Ron Paul. Minimalist. Free spirit. Champion of individual liberty. Any other Paul supporters here? :flag:
  22. You could start calling it a Mazda, but that would really confuse everyone.
  23. We attached the annoy-a-tron to the back of one of our coworkers computers. The device makes an annoying beep every so often. Everybody but him knew about it. When he'd ask "What's that sound?", they'd deny hearing anything. Eventually he concluded that his hard drive was failing, and called the help desk to request a new disk drive. We stopped the the maddness just before they started backing up his drive. Best $10 I've ever spent!
  24. Okay, I'm probably not THAT lucky. I have not opened each plastic bag yet! In addition to the missing headrest, there is this spare tire rack that was not ordered. :cuss: On the Caterhams the rack is integral--not a bolt-on item. So either it gets cut off or we order a spare tire. I am leaning toward getting the spare. The rack offers some rear crash protection and has a license plate mount too. Also there are three mystery parts. One is a plastic bag marked "oil sender return" (or something like that) with a braided oil line and some fittings. Another part is a small metal cylinder about two inches in both dimensions with a male fluid input on one side (brake? clutch?) and electrical connector on the other side. Finally there is a pair of trapizoidal interior (?) aluminum trim pieces (black on one side) with an angular bend. I'll try to post pictures of these soon. Oh, and an interior piping piece that is partial premounted is broken. Not sure what I'll do with that.:banghead: This weekend my focus is on polishing. I believe all the front suspension parts are present, so I can get started in the next week.
  25. Did an inventory last night. The packing was impressive. Looks like one of the headrests is missing. Other than that, I think we're good!
