Fancy modern electronics (12 volt adapter)
Xhilr8n replied to Xhilr8n's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Following CBuff’s guidance I’ve successfully mounted the 12 volt adapter under the instrument panel in a “solid enough” way using the 3m Duolock fastening tape. https://www.amazon.com/3M-SJ3560-CLR1333-Reclosable-Fastener/dp/B00AQ6IS1G?pd_rd_w=vXfmH&content-id=amzn1.sym.4cbcb1e0-172b-4571-a896-863b1ee67ab3&pf_rd_p=4cbcb1e0-172b-4571-a896-863b1ee67ab3&pf_rd_r=ECVM4QP45ZDMRVTA3S8F&pd_rd_wg=fwBzU&pd_rd_r=a37e8568-822c-4729-8fc2-10dd856609c4&pd_rd_i=B00AQ6IS1G&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_d_grid_rp_0_60_i -
I’ve found different plastics even on same car will respond differently to various elixirs. Back to Black is a favorite, as is Trim Shine and for some applications Sonax Plastic Restorer gel. But don’t put anything on all of them until you see how something does.

What cool protective eyewear have you found?

Have to agree. Might be blurred but you’re aware of it. -

I had some nice glacier glasses years ago, leather side shields and hooked around ear a lot. Seems some bicycle glasses might be good but they are not made to stay on past 30 mph Like the idea of a teather for a hat. -
All vehicles produce a following field of small stones and flecks and some more weighty pebbles. They have no idea. We know. We begin cleaning our cars by vacuming the gravel out of the seats. They are called “collector cars” because they collect up stuff as they drive around. Some sort of protective eyewear is in order. Regular eyeglasses better than nothing but when we ride without doors things could happen. Seems a good idea to have something for an innocent passenger on board as well. What have you found that can protect eyes and stay on in the upward wind and one not look too terribly like a knob? Or maybe just the first two 😊

Another aspect, I want the center rear view to be flat not convex. That’s the set up in my track Elise. I like that flat center mirror so it’s easier to judge distance and decide whether to point someone by. We can get by in these Lotus with the tiny mirror as the side ones are so large.
-
I fished through my collection of older wrenches to find two that could adjust there mirrors.
-
Yes the Spa mirrors are a good fit for this car, small, light, and useful. And who needs electric motors and switches and wires to adjust your view while rocketing along? This is all that you need to carry with you to adjust these mirrors as with DPRs windscreen mount (I’ll source lighter wrenches). .
-
it’s a desirable mirror I’m sure but it’s only advertised as mountable to a roll cage. I’ll be mounting per adhesive I assume just replacing the optics with something not out of a box of crackerjacks. I knew it was hard to see much but side by side with the Spas made replacing the windscreen mirror a requirement.
-
Just today tested out the Spa mirrors and posted another thread. Once adjusted they are very clear and useful. The center mirror is however revealed as subpar by how clear the Spas are.
-
This week I added a pair of the Spa side mirrors. Nice little units for the money. Turns out once adjusted they provide good clear rearward vision. In a 7! One of my rules of modding cars is that each improvement reveals a new weakness. I did not realize what a horrid excuse for an actual mirror the OEM piece is until I had anything to compare it to. I thought maybe I’d left on some frosted protective film, but no it really is that bad. Caterham are not too proud to provide some items for bare legality knowing we’ll find functional replacements somehow. Lots of rearview center mirrors out there. We have really little yet useful ones on our Lotus Eliges but I do think something larger than that nice unit is best for a Caterham. So what has anyone used they like? Anything particularly cool and racy but not huge?

Finally stopped the incesant rains and took her out. This car had just sat in storsge for over 2 1/2 years. I did not see much air when doing the flush, But today immediately noticed some feel to the pedal . Before it was something like pushing at drywall, now there is a sense of softness and modulation. Not sure what happened exactly but open to the idea that working on our cars sets us up to expect improvements. Point is the procedure seems a success. Brakes feel better, we have a proven way to change brake fluid color for the alternating flush technique, and I know the car better.
-
Haven’t taken her out yet to see if it all blows up 💥 , it’s rained for days. But yes it seems this will work just fine. And this powder is not expensive. 5 g costs twice what 1 g costs so you get a lifetime supply for you and some pals.
-
OK I did it. Added some of the powdered blue dye to new amber brake fluid. My advice is to put about a matchhead (scientific huh?) to a litre. This stuff is a powerful concentrated dye that has great potential for harm or mischief. Seriously a pinhead for 500 ml is a good starter dose. With the car in the air it’s a straightforward brake flush. The clutch is not so easy, the bleed nipple rests right on top of the broad trans so need a long tube to get on the good side of gravity. It was gratifying to see the blue fluid arrive to each piston.

Looking to flush the brakes tomorrow after the Hungarian Grand Prix. Long time McLaren fan, we’ll see what LeClerc can do against Piastri

So you’ll have a “rolling chassis” soon. Big milestone.

Looks like this was a tough site to start a photos page on. Especially if you’re left handed. Have to rotate it 360 degrees in an edit app to get the site to take it, and then the resolution gets clipped a lot. Then if you screenshot it it’s too big to upload. Trying to post a clear image of this art is a real challenge. I finally just gave up after quite a battle. I understand needing to limit the size of the data we want on the server but it’s disappointing. I’ve posted thousands of images on various sites mostly car related and never had this issue. Well, the resolution maybe 10 years ago but not recently. This is a lot of the fun with this internet thing.

First SV Test Drive...observations, any insights appreciated
Xhilr8n replied to desr's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I just need more seat time with her. Shifts smoothly just fine most of the time but the light flywheel and light rear end invites wheelspin. Now I live in a very hilly area with challenges everywhere. My driveway plenty steep. I stop and practice on it each time but not confident yet. Yet.
