I need new seats BUT they do not have to be Birkin seats...In fact something more comfortable would be even better. Primarily street driving...the car came with a set of Hoosier slicks and wheels but I am not sure that I will ever use them.
I have heard good things about the Cobra Roadster 7 seats. Any suggestions?
I haven't taken mine out yet, but at first measure they appear to be maybe 14 inches wide at the base...are the SV seats wider than other Caterham seats?
I pulled a plug this morning Denso ITV20...very black and sooty..too rich...Autozone came up with an AutoliteXP5364 but it looks longer.
Pretty sure I have a ZX3.
Looks like I have an ZX3 motor. I found the VIN Birkin 2061 /03...found it hidden under a water line.
Still curious about the Emerald ECU and how user friendly it might be.
Spark plugs?
Thanks for the help
After looking for a Caterham or Birkin for months a member of California Caterham club pointed me at a Birkin in north California...the deal was done..and a member here handled the transportation. I drove it to my office Sunday morning and 5 people took my picture!
The car is an 03 assembled by Dennis Tobin in 05...Zetec with Raceline ITBs and water rail..and I believe cams...Emerald ECU...5400 miles
A couple of questions:
The ECU was mapped in 05 when it was assembled and I have the printouts...along with a patch cord and disc. Is this process something that needs to be done again...altitude here is about 500 ft vs about 4000 were the car lived...or just redone to keep in tune. Does it have to be done on a chassis dyno to be effective, since I have not been able to locate one in Arkansas...there was one shop and it closed.
How can I tell which Zetec I have?
Birkin manual says there is a 17 character vin stamped on the "left hand diagonal" I can't see one.
Spark plug preferences?
Any things that I need to watch for?
This forum has been very helpful in my search.
I am in Arkansas...I will call Hagertys and remind them it is replica of a Lotus 7...the rep for a local company that calls on me can write it for only $236 but I have to move my other cars...that may be my best option. I will check with Grundy this morning. Thanks for the advice.
I am in the process of buying an 03 Birkin...it is being picked Thursday. My houses and cars are with Travelers...they could not cover the Birkin. I checked with Hagertys...they are still thinking about it but are giving me grief about the newer age of the car...they called today and seemed to try to get me to say that I would be driving the car often...a daily driver...they seemed to be looking for a way not to write it. Has anyone had this kind of problem. It was a confusing call. Driving record is spotless.
Any thoughts
Awful...he never quite says that he built it..but it cost over $25k and he doesn't want any low ball offers!
It may just be me...but the spelling and grammar on Craigslist ads is almost enough to scare me away.
I am constantly amazed by the detail and quality of workmanship that I see by this group...I used to think the Miata people were fanatics but they don't even come close...
Whenever I do find a Caterham or Birkin I know I don't have that much free time to work on a car...I have to find one in good condition.
This car looks like a piece of jewelry...outstanding.
I still have not found a car but a couple of questions have come up...let's say I buy a crossflow car and in a few years want to upgrade to a Zetec or maybe Duratec motor. How much trouble would this be...cost? and would the used crossflow have much value?
Would it just be better to buy the Zetec or Duratec now? I have found several nice crossflow cars but the lure of the newer and more powerful engine is pretty strong. This will be a weekend car.
I am still looking for a Caterham, early 2000s, Zetec, color not important, but I like the polished aluminum...I have heard many good things about Birkins and might consider one. I would prefer to find something within the midwest or east.
I have started looking for a Seven. I would prefer an early 2000's Zetec. Not looking for a trailer queen or a racecar. No real color preference but I do like the polished aluminum. Prefer Midwest or East where I can fly, buy and drive home. The 02 that sold here last month would have been great. Not in a hurry but will wait for the right car at a realistic price.
