Gauging interest - Buttonwillow and/or Willow Springs

Up here in sunny Seattle, we're in the planning stages of a mid-winter track tour to California in the month of February. Our goal is to bring as many willing Sevens as possible from the NW, and it would be great to meet-up with other Seven enthusiasts at the various tracks we hope to visit.

Tentatively, this is our straw-man schedule:

  • 2/5-2/6 - Thunderhill (3mi and 2mi respectively)
  • 2/7 - Sonoma (HOD)
  • 2/9 - 2/11 - Buttonwillow and Willow Springs
  • 2/13-2/14 - Chuckwalla (NASA AZ, HPDE)
  • ???

Currently, no clubs/organizations are booked at WS or Buttonwillow in the 2/9-2/11 timeframe. However, with enough aggregate, committed interest, renting both tracks could be feasible.

It would be great for our group up here in the NW to meet fellow Seven owners in CA, sharing our passion for these cars at speed, on track.

Any interest?

Cheers,

-Bruce

I recommend you work with the GGLC as they host a lot of events in the area and have 3-4 sevens at each event

http://www.gglotus.org/trkdays/ggtrkday.htm - the 2016 calendar hasnt been posted yet and even if they dont have an event for Feb it is a great way to get more CA Sevens interested.

Thanks - I'm having a dialog with them as well. I believe they have a day at Laguna on the 22nd, but it may be outside our travel window.

Come on lurkers :-) Let's go to the track!

I would normally attend but 3 of us are making a trip to COTA in the end of Feb and I'd rather not risk a mechanical just before that.

Wish I could make the 7th at Sonoma - we have some vacation planned that day and I still need to upgrade the rocker hardware before getting on the track. Have fun!

Can't commit, but I'd be interested in joining you at Willow Springs. Maybe Buttonwillow.

We'll see if WS and Buttonwillow come together - it will boil down to numbers. Thanks for the interest, and I'll keep you updated.

After having done the Ring with my Zed 4 while living in Germany. I could see that doing track days is right up there with a heroin addiction, But way more expensive.

We'll need to get you plugged-in to our NW Caterham Club and Friends track days and multi-day "expeditions".

Well boy howdy, this could be interesting. I am a "wet behind the ears" noob here, having swapped a Formula Mazda for a Super Stalker 3 weeks ago. But not a noob to these tracks, having driven and raced on them for 15 years. And lookee here, if I'm not too much of an outlaw with a Brunton, I just may have some time open to be at T-Hill or Sonoma.

And there's a local Central CA club I have raced with since 2002 that has 14 Caterhams. So if you want, I'll let them know.

By all means, please let the club know. 14 Caterhams - wow.

any update on this? any of these dates shaping up to happen?

It appears that the first three are starting to gel. So far, the mid-week interest is not much more than what I've seen here.

by first 3, you mean the 2 days at T-Hill and the Sunday at Sonoma with HOD?

what's the plan for T-Hill; open test on Friday and rent the 2 mile track on Saturday? or enter Redline event?

what's the plan for HOD? everyone sign up on their own?

It looks like the Saturday 2mi at Thill is now going to require our own rental (previously, a lapping day organizer had it scheduled). With sufficient numbers, a track rental could be feasible, however, that is currently not the case. I have a call into Sonoma, to see if something could be worked out for 2/6 instead - then, we would have two days at Sonoma.

Yes - for Sunday 2/7, everyone will register through Hooked On Driving.

thanks bruce. I responded to your PM but I don't see a copy; can't figure out what I did wrong. Anyway, I think the Sonoma 2/7 day with HOD is the way to go. Simple. no risk with weather etc.

Private track rentals are always tough. Been there done that with a very healthy group of my local Formula Mazda brethren and it was still tough.

Thanks for organizing. It's a thankless job.

Finally got your PM and responded. Rain sucks, but, if it's a good group, fun is to be had anyway. For some of us, Thill West will be a first-time experience, so any rain will have less impact in the process of orienting to the new track.

But hey - why are we so convinced it's going to rain? It's not Seattle :-)
