papak Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 How much ground clearance would I gain between a Raceline dry sump and wet sump on a Duratec? Curious. Right now I have exactly 2" with the wet sump. It can be an issue.
simon450 Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 I upgraded from wet to dry sump. The wet sump is approx 3” deep and the dry sump 2” so theoretically 1”, BUT on my Duratec car the bell housing is approx 3” below the base of the engine (excluding sump) which would put it inline with the wet sump and eliminate the advantage. papak Posted June 28, 2018 Author Posted June 28, 2018 Upon second look, I realized that as well. The Birkin sump guard adds another ½” or so also.
JohnCh Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 Raceline also sells a smaller bellhousing to take advantage of the dry sump. They previously told me it uses the same clutch as the standard bellhousing, but requires a new flywheel. My notes don't indicate if a different starter is also needed. -John
papak Posted June 30, 2018 Author Posted June 30, 2018 I am using a lightened Focus flywheel (12.4 lbs) but it is the same diameter as the Ranger one (19.5 lbs). The bell housing is as supplied by Birkin. I could probably grind off ½” or so before exposing the inside of the bellhousing.
JeffersonRaley Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 I have the AT Power dry sump and didn't gain any ground clearance because of the transmission bellhousing and Birkin sump guard. Even without the guard the oil pickups drop below the level of the drysump. So I don't think you'll get much clearance, but you will get much better oiling on track. Note that I think the Raceline drysump is the better choice, regardless of clearance, because of the integrated & chain driven oil pump.
