Oil leak in footwell???

So, driving back from a car show this afternoon I climb out of the car and notice a drop of oil on my shoe ... When I take a look up in the footwell there is a tiny puddle (maybe 3 drops or so) in the floor of the footwell and a small streak down the angled front wall of the footwell in front of and between the clutch and brake pedals.

The master cylinders are in engine bay above pedal box do not seem to be leaking ... Any ideas where to start?

Show us a photo of your engine bay pedal box to firewall/scuttle. My engine oil catch tank is in this area and in its early days it would leak like this.

Assuming that is not the location of your catch tank then I question if it is engine oil or something else? If it is engine oil then do you have a mechanical oil pressure gauge which has the capillary tube full of oil leaking? If not engine oil then is it clutch fluid leaking? Its easy enough to pull the top of the pedal box off (4 screws) and check.

Looks like the cylinder gasket on clutch cylinder has gone ... Going to replace the whole clutch cylinder and upgrade to larger brake master cylinder while I'm at it. What is the best place to source these parts in the US?

Also, does anyone have the procedure for bleeding the hydraulic clutch system?

Thanks

Like Croc, my Zetec Cat has occasionally leaked oil into my footwell. It only happens when I, or my mechanic, add too much oil. The oil catch tank is right above the footwell and it overfills then spills. I had a similar problem with my X-Flow powered Cat, but the extra oil would come out of the breather cap and onto the headers, where it was converted into a spectacular smoke cloud!
