Caterhams is not a registered company in the USA

Recommended Posts

Well here's a dilemma.

I am trying to get a plate for my Caterham in Florida and as the title say cater it raised a red flag.

So I am told that Caterham is not a registered car company in the US as Caterham ins not in the national database

This came from direct from Tallahassee.

The guy at the tag place said I have two choices, I can contact Caterham and ask them, to complete their US registration or register the car as a "Kit Car"

Can any US owner confirm their cars are licenced and registered as Caterhams as this seems wrong but I am not about to question the DMV as I do not have a tag yet and not looking to cause problems

Another member just registered his Atom in FL which is something I couldn't even dream of in NY.

I got lucky with the fact that it was already titled as "Cater" Caterham in NC earlier in it's life and NY DMV didn't give me any issues. As a matter a fact the lady behind the counter looked up a few other owners in the state and said that there are at least 4 others within 100 miles or so.

Caterham are not a recognized US manufacturer of cars - they import kits and rollers. If they were a recognized US manufacturer then they would sell cars that meet all NTSB requirements - impact absorbing bumpers, airbags, been crash tested, etc. Clearly that has not happened...

Each state then chooses to title and register Caterhams their own way. I bought a Caterham out of FL in 2008 and just checking the old title copy I retained, it shows Caterham on it.

Panamericano just kindly pointed out to me that I should have referred to FMVSS - Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, a sub set of USDOT and not NTSB.

Dont worry, situation normal, I am NFI! :jester:
