Oil pan clearance help needed

1.75" of clearance is not the greatest scenario on first blush.

 

 

Is a dry sump my only option at this point for a 1.6L Sigma engine? If so, what is everyone using?

I'm looking forward to seeing the responses. I have the same clearance (a 7 with a CC) and was worried about strikes. I do not drive over "aggressive" speed bumps (like in parking lots) as they certainly would touch. but the larger ones (on the road) are ok. I also keep a watch, or avoid, steep entry driveways but no issues so far. My car has a welded tube behind the sump and it has seen hits in its life. Odd, the sump is clean, maybe previous owners backed over question marks first:)

But never an issue on the road.

A little research shows a Raceline wet sump system, someone also mentions a "Ford Contour" oil pan.

 

Anyone know the clearances of both compared to the stock pan seen in the pictures above?

 

Since the car is sitting on an open center trailer for the next two weeks, might as well start working on a solution now, than waiting until it's on the road.

First observation I would make is that your sump is not the one I have seen on the UK Caterham Sigma cars I have driven regularly.  Their sumps look like this one:

If you want to go dry then there are two options I am aware of.

Premier Power are the Sigma specialists

Dry Sump Oil System Installation - PREMIER POWER (premierpowerengines.com)

 

AT Power has a dry sump but I dont know anyone who has used them

Ford Sigma/Zetec Dry Sump Kit (atpower.com)

 

 

Lastly, these engines were used in Formula Ford in the UK.  There was a Ford Racing replacement for that application.  Never seen one.  I assume it is a baffled wet sump.  Don't have a link sorry.

   I do not want to go dry, but if nothing "in stock" (Caterham options out of stock in the UK at least, have feeler out to US based dealer for options) pans out, I may be forced to go in that direction. Due to family and personal health issues this weekend, I have not even had time to take the bonnet off to get the part number off the motor to see exactly which "Sigma" engine I have. Maybe tonight, maybe next week, or even next month. Only time will tell.

Don't trust the Caterham website notice.  Always give them a call to find out the parts and the lead time.  They frequently show out of stock when its an available to order part.  

 

You will need the engine variant number to be sure what you are ordering.

Where would I find the engine variant, bar code label, casting code, or simply looking to see if the starter is on one side vs the other ?

I will bet you have a ZSG416 as this was the Ford Power Crate 1.6 Sigma (also called a Duratec at one point).

 

Fords nearly always have their stamped numbers near the starter motor mount.  Also look under the exhaust manifold.
