Roll Bar Wanted

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 Caterham S3 and I am looking for a non-FIA low roll bar with 90 degree uprights and no diagonal bracing.  I will not be racing and I’m more interested in a vintage appearance similar to early Lotus/Caterham.  Good, used condition would be fine.  I’m in central Pennsylvania and accessability within a day’s drive would be preferable to avoid shipping costs.

Must specify DeDion or Live Axle, Metric or Imperial.

A simple  Rollbar would be so easy for someone to weld up, consider getting a welder to make a jig based on your bar and making one to your spec..

This is my plan to replace my FIA.  I want a DeDion style standard bar for an Imperial live axle, but it was never made (TIKO) so I need to have one made.

It won't be cheap, but neither will buying a bar to find it doesn't fit or got bent in the shipping.

It works out about the same.

I took the standard roll bar off this 95 car ( the one shown in the picture) DeDion rear end, not sure if it is metric or imperial? I'm in Cincinnati and could ship it to you, it isn't very heavy. I'm not looking for anything for it if you can just cover shipping cost. Let me know if you are interested, I can get you some measurements if you need them.

So very kind of you.  Could you please measure center to center of upright bars at point of attachment to frame and, if possible, photos of attachment points of uprights and rear brace.  Ever so grateful, Dwight

I’m thinking our roll bars may not be compatible.  See photos of my upright mounting base; it has a large flat plate on which the bar is welded and this appears to be quite different than yours. I’m learning that there are a myriad of bars and finding one that’s suitable may be very difficult.

Dwight,  if you have an FIA, the plate you have will be much more substantial and be bolted down by more than one bolt.  The road bars are much simpler with single bolt fastening.

Consider removing you bar entirely and posting pic of the entire mount area.

  • 1 month later...

Follow-up: I’ve obtained and installed a standard roll over bar meeting my desired appearance.  I’ve also decided to keep my original FIA bar with petty strut in the event someone would want to use the car in competition in the future. Josh Robbins from Rocky Mountain Caterham was more than helpful with the process.  I would heartily recommend Josh for anything Caterham related.

I second the motion for pictures!

I have an original 1961 (series 2) RHD 7 and need a new rollover bar since the original was cut off many years ago. I was looking at the Caterham website and the trackday with Petty strut is an option if the S3 dims are similar to an original S2 , and also there is a guy on the locost forum that makes a kit (they do the bends, you cut to size and weld). I want the older style where the main hoop sides are parallel, not the later Caterham style that tapers in. So any pics would help be land on a direction,.

Thanks All! Mark

Really nothing to see here.  Just the new standard bar which I swapped for the FIA bar with its forward slope and cross brace.  The new bar is more upright, has no cross brace, and slants inward following the profile of the windscreen (although I have Brooklands screens). The only issue I had to contend with was fabricating bolts which mount upward into the roll bar bosses above the rear shock. The previous bar did not have these bolts installed, as is often the case, because the clearance is very minimal,

Overall, I’ve achieved my goal.
