Timothy Keith-Lucas
Is there a route to a full windscreen, with the triangular side attachments and maybe even wipers, for an S2? The 7 I'm looking at was set up for racing long ago and has only a small bug diverter. It's otherwise close to original. Does anyone have one for sale, or is this going to be a construction project? The Caterham windscreen is available, but I'm doubting that is the same. Thanks a bunch. --Tim.
MV8
The seller may have those parts. My understanding is that technically, the Seven started being a Caterham in 1973 (S3) and not a '60's S2. The info I have indicates S2 and S3 should both have a 32x10 windscreen and the same attachments. The screen assembly is available from CAT in the USA but it will still be some work: http://www.beachmanracing.com/windscreens-and-wiper-parts S2 and S3 chassis differences are fitment of the wider track ford axle and full length exhaust mounting. Timothy Keith-Lucas
Thank you, MV8. That's good expert information you passed on to me.
Timothy Keith-Lucas
Related question, given that I am still without a solution to the problem: Can the S3 Caterham windscreen fit/be adapted to the S2 Lotus &? I note no side braces, but they are available, but I don't know whether the curve across the top of the body in front of the instrument panel is the same for the S2 Lotus & and the S3 Caterham. Thanks.
MV8
It should be the same.
IamScotticus
If you look at many pictures of scuttle And screen fitments, you will notice there may be some variation in the arch of the screen frame to the scuttle surface. This isn't unusual at all. Caterham & Arch has been very true to maintaining integrity of original Lotus body form by building the chassis on the same jigs for decades implementing only minor changes. Much of a Seven is hand fitted and some adjustments aren't unusual. Scuttle stanchion holes should be elongated for screen height adjustments. I have a Lotus screen that fits my 95 Cat scuttle better than a recent manufacture screen. Buy a new Cat screen with confidence. Just don't get an SV unless you have an SV. Timothy Keith-Lucas
Thanks, everyone. I continue to pursue ownership. Knowing I can (for a price!) put a windscreen on a racer that only keeps the bugs out of your teeth is a big help.
SENC
Not professing experience to confirm, but I believe the answer is yes. In fact, one of the "tells" if an S2 or S3 is largely original vs potentially a build-up is looking at the windscreen frame. If the "a" or triangle is solid/one piece, it is a Caterham frame - whereas you can see the joints on the Lotus ones. That would suggest to me a common fit. Timothy Keith-Lucas
Thank you, SENC. Being able to put a full windscreen on a racer 7 widens my search considerably, although it looks like it will cost $1,000 to $2,000 depending on whether I would include windshield wipers. I continue to scrape up 7s for sale.
SENC
Just be patient - there are only so many of them, but the right one will come along. Don't discount importing one, either - with shipping costs on the way down and still a good exchange rate, that may be a viable option. I imported mine a number of years ago because it was too good a car to pass up given its price. If you haven't found them, yet, there are a few active FB groups for Lotus and 7s - the historic lotus group being one. They would be good places to let your interest be known. Timothy Keith-Lucas
Thank you, SENC. I'm really impressed, and thankful, for you and your cohort of owners/experts who are willing to take the time to coach me in this. It's a very supportive group that I look forward to joining. I'm looking at three now, each with advatages and disadvantages for me. You speak with wisdom - the cost of getting one from Europe may not be to much more than the cost of getting one from California, and there are a bunch of attractive options in Europe. I don't think it would be fair to ask my cousin who preps club racing cars in southeastern England to look for one, but it's tempting. One positive note: being cognitively as well as physically ambidextrous, good Sevens being right hand drive is in no way a negative. Best wishes, --Tim. Timothy Keith-Lucas
Thank you. Can you tell me whether it is bare aluminum or black? Quote me a price before I order one from Caterham parts? Best wishes, Tim.
