R1 Seven Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Been a while since I put up some video. Here is some VIR full course action from last Friday. This was the instructor lapping day before the Tarheel BMW CCA weekend. The car is getting better. Taking most of the toe-out from the rear end housing seems to have helped... Slowly but surely the car is becoming faster and well behaved. Going foot-to-the-floor in 6th gear through the uphill esses was the higlight of the weekend. http://www.project-seven.goof.com/videos/LCVIRFull907.wmv
stevet Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Looking good Jeff... the car sounds a little less 'frantic' - is that the new gearing or yet another example of my ever diminishing memory? Always nice to see those Porches going backwards :jester:
DBs seven Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 I was at VIR on Sunday and saw your car there. car looked great and was quite a "giant killer" ,you made easy work of several other, more expensive cars whilst I was watching. Nice car and well driven !!
R1 Seven Posted September 18, 2007 Author Posted September 18, 2007 Thanks for the kind words. You should have stopped by and said "hey". Did you have the Westie with you?
DBs seven Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 I did not unfortunately , I was just there to sign up for membership and was on a bit of a tight schedule to get back to Raleigh. When you go next time , let me know and I will bring the Westie. I plan to run in the next few club member days.
slngsht Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Jeff, your car is coming along so nicely. maybe next year you can lead me around the track :blueangel:
11Budlite Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Jeff, looks like you really had your car cooking!!! "Always nice to see those Porches going backwards" x2 Bruce
R1 Seven Posted September 19, 2007 Author Posted September 19, 2007 Thanks guys. Steve - Your ears do not deceive you. The car spends less time at the rev limiter now. Instead of bouncing off of it going down every straight, it is jut aproaching it at the end of the long straights. Gearing is the reason. DBs Seven - This may be the last weekend at VIR this year, unless I can get in on one of the November events. Mazda - You got it! Get that thing track ready.
BobDrye Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Jeff: I drove the full VIR course with you last night. What was that 3 series that almost kept up with us ? Thanks

Thanks Bob - It was a pumped up E36 M3. I am not sure what the specs were specifically, but it was not stock. The stock ones are much easier to deal with. :reddevil: It is obvious in the video where the advantages lie with each car.
HPC Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 Looked like your car was a bit more "loose" in right-hand corners than in left ones. I guess the left rear tire didn't look too good at the end of the session.
JBH Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 Thanks for the video - nice gear box. I am definitely envious of that. Any idea of your top speed on the front and back straights? I am at VIR this weekend and Monday with FSR PCA. We are running South Course over the weekend and Full Course on Monday. My car just chews up the South Course. I am a little worried about my top speed on Monday. Looks like you were running 2:16 - 2:17 laps. Very nice!

The way the car is geared, when it hits the rev limiter in 6th it is going roughly 135mph. At the end of the back straight it is right on the verge of hitting the rev limiter. I would estimate about 5mph slower on the front straight. Clear laps were hard to come by over the weekend. But, I did have a few in the 2:12 - 2:13 range (there is a 2:13 buried in that vid somewhere...). My personal goal on Full Course, once the car is all the way sorted and on slicks is 2:10 or better. That fancy gearbox is built right into the motorycycle engine. Have fun at the PCA event! And yes the South Course is perfect for small light cars. I love it too!
JBH Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 Just got back from VIR. There was no way to get times other than those generated when I was running with a 355 Challenge Car. He was turning 2:18 and I was a little faster than him. Top Speed for me is 125 - 130 on the back straight - I am out of revs 200 feet or so before the braking zone. I know I can pick up some time here and there, but I think slicks would make a big difference. The six speed gearbox is still troublesome (hence my envy for a sequential) as I search for third. The best technique, though hardly optimal, is to down shift 6 to 5 to 4 to 3 or 6 to 5 to 3 Most people are amazed at how fast the car drives into and out of turns. I catch most cars by braking deeper and/or using engine torque coming out of the corner. I love this car. Doug: Welcome to VIR Club. I am not sure of your driving experience, but if you solo, have them put you into Open Wheel. I'll be there in early Oct. with my Formula Ford.
R1 Seven Posted September 25, 2007 Author Posted September 25, 2007 JBH - Sounds like we would have a good time running together with our Sevens. They seem like a very close match. I think that the aero "wall" hits us pretty hard in the Sevens. Getting much more than 130ish mph would take a good bit more power (and apparently gearing). I can tell as soon as I hit 6th gear that the car does not accelerate much for the second half of the straight despite being in the peak power range. The only reason that I can eek out more mph on the back straight is because of the nice downhill before the braking zone.
