1998 Caterham Seven VX, Vauxhall 1600 8V - SOLD!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I have for sale my recently imported 1998 Caterham Seven VX with the Vauxhall 1600 8V engine built by Holden Australia on twin 45 carburetors with a De Dion rear axle. The car comes with proof of build including engine installation, complete service history, MOT history and receipt for every item. It has been upgraded with 4-pot ventilated front discs, uprated calipers and brake pads as well as uprated brake hoses for better performance and safety. Other features include a removable MOMO steering wheel and full wet weather equipment. The Uniroyal all-weather tires have only 500 miles on them. Also included is a new Monsoon Winter Cover with a locking kit.

I imported this Caterham from the UK through my import dealership Peregrine Motors LLC. We are based in Huntland, TN and if you are not local I would be more than happy to refer you to my shipping partner who handles all of our customers car transportation needs. We bought this off of an individual in Stroud, UK (Northeast of Bristol). The previous owner just put in fresh spark plugs and had the oil and filter changed 1,200 miles ago.

The car comes with two full binders of service records. It honestly has the most service records of any vehicle that I have ever imported (I have imported over a hundred vehicles from the UK). It has a stack of MOT certificates as well as tax discs. Also, it has all of the original letters of communication with Caterham corporate as well as the original build sheet and Caterham marketing materials.

The car runs and drives great as can be seen in the video that I have listed below. I also have listed below a eight plus minute long video of me going through both service binders.

Interesting. While this engine family is a rare sight in a Caterham here in the States, it should be largely interchangeable/upgradeable with the 80-90s GM (cavalier, sunbird, grandam, and fwd T-type) SD MPFI 2.0L base engine (still square; bore and stroke increased with a 6400 rpm redline), which was also offered turbocharged in GT models (LT3, 9psi, 165hp/174ftlbs. Being built in Holden, I expect the engine was made there as well, making it an Opel "Family II" which is the larger block family with a minimum displacement offering of 1.6L. The bell housing is not the same as the v6-60 or Quad-4 due in part to the high starter location on the intake side.

Clarification - It was built by GM Holden in Melbourne Australia.  Originally used in the Holden Camira but the engine ended up being exported all over the world for other GM companies - Vauxhall and Opel.

What is the power like on it? SDK indicates its built by the factory? Interesting engine choice.

The SDK is the manufacturer code for Caterham. The other K indicates a kit built car.
