Al N.
Read about this here: BMW vs. Mitsu Commercial on Al's Blog And let me know what you think.
sporqster
So they both started a religion. Who cares- they're both praying to the same car god, right? Dunno - I bet the ad execs @ BMW knew what they were doing, but they're targeting slightly different audiences, I think. I doubt, (I may be way off here) that a lot of folks are debating between a 3-series and an evo. Kinda apples and oranges if you ask me. Funny thing though, the BMW commercial makes me want to buy an old BMW more than it does a new one!
AK Seven
My only problem with the Mitsu ad is that they draw on their rally tradition, but are not competing in the WRC. Meanwhile BMW have WTCC, BTCC and F1 programs. But like others, these ads makes we want an E30 M3 or an Evo 4... back when they were still raw machines, not computers on wheels. Now if only all car ads could be 3mins long...
Arya Ebrahimi
I can see the similarities, but honestly, I think it's like a patent. If you improve on an existing idea significantly, then you can patent it yourself. I think that's what BMW did. The Mitsu commercial left me spinning and distracted, while the BMW commercial was very effective IMHO. And I don't think it was a blatant copy. BMW's narration added a whole other dimension to the commercial that the mitsu ad lacked.
stevet
Not like me to disagree with Al, but... This kind of heritage ad has been done dozens of times before - sometimes well (as in both these examples), sometimes not so well. I have seen great examples by Porsche and Mercedes in Europe for example. For me they work when 1. you have a demonstrable and relevant heritage and, 2. (as with all good ads) you find a creative way to get that across to you target. Both these ads work in my view, but in slightly different ways - Mitsu is almost certainly aimed younger so can stand more quick cutting and less 'copy', BMW uses a grown up voice to offset the 'unusual' depiction of its cars. We should be glad to have these - there are still way too many car ads with loving shots of cars driving in slow motion through a series of bends at sunset (often the same bends, BTW). Boring
slngsht
all these ads are boring. Joe Isuzu rules. BTW, if you watch closely, you will see that Boxologist is doing some of the stunt driving in this ad... Can you tell me which part?
Boxologist
there were no cones stuck under the exhaust nor any timing equipment. i can only hope to have that driving ability some day. till then i have my lucky hat!

banjo29
I doubt, (I may be way off here) that a lot of folks are debating between a 3-series and an evo. Kinda apples and oranges if you ask me. I don't know, I think I am that audience, although I don't typically fall into the 'a lot of folks' type groups, so you may be right. I had an Evo 8, now have an M3, both are spectacular cars with similar performance characteristics. Out of the box I would give the edge to the Evo on steering and suspension, the M3 on all other aspects, including overall fun factor. The Evo is definitely the more 'boy racer' type of the two, popular with the younger crowd, probably due to the enormous wing and the lower cost. I remember driving it by high schools and being seriously gawked at.
