Rust belt blues

As a Midwesterner, I have watched with interest as S Calif goes up in smoke. And, the local paper today featured an article abt three southern states who are running out of water. That's nothing new in the West where water supply is a constant worry, except when they have too much, causing mud slides. Or when they are more worried about earthquakes

Then there are the hurricanes in Florida, etc, and apparently the entire east & west coasts are going to be submerged after 50 more years of global warming.

But, while we sit here high and dry with tons of water and an absence of most of the above natural disasters we are cursed nonetheless. We have to deal with rust!

No wonder everyone is moving out of here and to those other more desirable locales.

I'm still searching for my utopia. Moderate weather. Near the snow, but not buried in it. Near the ocean. No hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, earthquakes, active volcanoes, or high fire danger. Affordable. Not crowded. And lots of twisty roads!

Sounds like New Zealand.

:iagree: The South Island is great especially and just south of Christchurch (lived their 4yrs) as you have beautiful rolling hill farms (example Timaru) that sit on the east coast with snow capped mountains to the south and the central part of the island plus it has four seasons of which I feel are fair to moderate and the people are great.

Just have to convince the wife to move again and that is were I would call home if it were not for her family.

I've always said they should give Bakersfield, Ca the motto " 2 hours from where you want to be"... You can be at the ocean surfing or in the mountains skiing (depending on time of year you could probably do both in a long day). We're at the end of the central valley with mountains on 3 sides and have some great roads ... Also a little over an hour away from 2 pretty good racetracks; Willow Springs & Buttonwillow.

Only thing, it gets freakin HOT in the summer time.... but that keeps the cost of homes down (relatively speaking) and the LA crowd away. Getting ready to retire and have looked around but the variety of things California offers is hard to beat. I'll probably move to the surrounding foothills, off the valley floor and it's heat/smog.

I spent 10 years in Sacramento... "2 hours from anything you want" was spoken by me many a time. We were 2 hours from Tahoe, San Francisco, and Thunderhill. Now I am in Dallas, where the city is much nicer than Sacramento and the weather is about the same, but driving 2 hours doesn't really get you much. :D The big plus I've found is that between 5 organizations that each have their own autocross series, and 3 (soon to be 4) tracks, there is never a weekend where you can't race if you want to. We are 3.5 hours or less from everything, but that is by plane. :banghead:
