Hello! I just bought a 2014 Caterham which was titled and registered in Illinois. Working through what it takes to get it titled and legal in Wisconsin. Mostly planning on it being just for touring (no track use planned). Does anyone have any experience in this? First thing I expect to be a problem is the 4 point harness to fail inspection. I believe it needs a 3 point harness but it looks like the expected spot for the top mount isn't threaded or available on this. Before I go wild, would love to talk to some folks who have gotten their caterham titles in Wisconsin recently (especially Dane county/Madison area).

Thanks!

No personal experience with Wisconsin. Maybe @fred.lemke can weigh in. I have 6 pt schroth harnesses that have buckles that some DMV dont say pass but it wasnt an issues in NY. Schroth makes an FE harness with different buckles which I assume are designed to pass some DMV requirements. I would check the DMV website and see if you need any inspections to register and out of state car.

At least in NY, the bigger issue is emissions. Some cars are titled as Custom Vehicles (or home made), they are exempt from regular emissions testing. Some who have brought cars in from out of state that were previously registered title and register it as a Caterham. But if it's under 15 years old they are required to have emissions testing. This cannot be done with the electronics in a caterham. While it does have an OBD type port under that dash, it wont register anything at the inspection station if they plug into it. And if they are able to read anything it will throw errors all over.

You could also check with Time Machines Dealer, I believe he has shipped a few to Wisconsin. He might have some ideas.

Good luck and have fun!!

If you find out you can't use a 4-pt harness, there should be bosses right in front of the main rollbar supports that are threaded 7/16 UNF for the upper seat belt mount of a 3-pt harness. I can't tell from your photo but is there a plug in there?

Thanks! Emissions won't be an issue in Wisconsin. There is an inspection. Got some good info on the last few hours that others have successfully titled with a 4 point harness so will try that.

Yes, looks like the top mount is there. Will need to go down that route if I fail inspection.

Going to start working on this tomorrow with DMV.

Thank you!

I built my Caterham in 2024 from a kit. It has the 3 point belt, but I replaced it with aftermarket 5 point harness.  When I built it and began the registration process, I only needed to send photos and the proper registration forms.  No inspections, no trips to the DMV. I am in Pepin County (River Falls, WI). Good luck. Hope this helps. Happy motoring.
