intake scoop-snorkel-seats

We saw the coolest air intake scoop snorkel on a car on the Birkin australia site.

we will be needing an air filter at least but would like to add a functional (but not too obnoxious) air inlet for the Birkin we are getting. maybe something like the grey car?

Any thoughts?

everything we find pre-made seems to be for a huge dragster or something. :ack: we have seen some smaller ones on racing-formula cars, how can we find one? or..has anyone made one? anyone have a set of molds for one? any thoughts or help?we know a bit of fiberglass working after we restored our sailboat.

also, what are people using for Birkin seats...besides birkin seats? The birkin we tried on for size was awesome, but our backs are not the best and we might need something a tad more supportive. what fits without breaking the bank?

Can you post a pic of the intake?

Regarding seats, there are not a lot of options out there that don't break the bank. The one-piece seats like Tillets or Mogs are surprisingly comfortable, but they are also really expensive. There are some small manufacturers making similarly styled seats which are cheaper -- just make sure they are rigid and well made. Another option is the original Westfield Race seats with the optional padding, or their new version. They are a bit on the narrow side, but comfy. Looking at more traditional style seats, I’ve heard good things about the Cobra Roadster 7, but I’m not sure if they will fit in a Birkin. Another option is the Caterham S-style seats. They might be pricey new, but they do come up for sale occasionally when someone is upgrading to Tillets. Of course, finding a pair might take a while.

Many of us just run an ITG type foam filter (or paper for the traditionalists!) that peeks out of bonnet cut-out. I've seen vintage Loti with the a little bump out induction cowl and someone makes a carbon one that I've seen for Cat r500s. IMHO, that thing on the grey car you show is over the top and to my eyes a little ugly.

Start with the filter, and then take it from there.

I would think that the air intake on Tim's car is intended for a formula or sports race car. I would also guess that it is made to comply with a rule for a specified intake restrictor size and likely doesn't have anything more then a wire screen as a filter.

You may have some luck finding a source, but I would recommend you use a filter if you car is intended as a street car. Tim's car is race only and can get away without a filter.

For the traditional filter route, a good option is ITG like Al recommended. You can get similar filters from K&N, Pipercross and likely others if you look around on the web.

Ah, those photos didn't appear for me when I posted earlier. You weren't kidding when you wrote that you will need an air filter ;) I agree that an ITG or Pipercross is the way to go. Looking at the photo of your carbs, those appear to be backing plates for K&N filters, so that is probably the easiest route, since the hole in the bonnet is probably sized for those items. Not sure if an ITG or Pipercross would fit without additional trimming, but someone on here probably knows the answer.

The term I have seen used for the air intake you have a picture of is an "airbox". The primary reason for running an airbox is to reduce the noise of the intake system in order to comply with trackday sound levels. It will reduce your top HP by a small margin though.

Yes, they do (with minor modification). I have them in my Birkin, very comfy and looking great IMO. Not the ultimate lightest and not exactly cheap after shipping, especially at the absurd exchange rate. The US importer for Cobra does not carry this model. I did however remove the adjustable seat rails to drop the seats to the very bottom.

The cobra seats are very nice looking, i especially like the looks of the historic style and they have with the headrest yet. We will be using our car for moderate distances so we want to be comfortable, yet we dont want to add big goobers of weight if we dont have to. are the cobra seats heavy? They have something like these locally at "summit racing" in akron but they seem to be very heavy.

intake-airbox...i was under the impression that the main function of the airbox was to have a small ram effect and get cool fresh air into the carbs. I realize some are restricted per regulations but thats only in a strict spec car class.. right?

I have run open (with screens) S.U's and webers on my race cars and you while they deffinitly produce some noise, not nearly what the exhaust covers up soundwise...but again those were full body cars.

yeah the one on the grey car might have a restricted bernoulli opening for whatever reason and is a bit overwhelming/obnoxious size wise. We will look into the filters as suggested those sound like a great starting point. We just dont want to suck rocks into the webers! We also found a way to perhaps make a classy little scoop using a lost styrofoam and west system method per our sailboat-fiberglass experience.
