Locost 5.0
I got my sb100 # this morning:cheers:  . I was out of the DMV by 9:10. I have to say the local DMV did a great job. I hope everybody else had the same luck. Rod

Locost 5.0
Wow, I thought you would get it for sure. I was talking to someone about what to do if I didn't get my #, and he said you could still get a temp operating permit untill the next year. I haven't researched it yet. Sorry to hear you didn't get your # . Rod
Mondo
I think I can do the temp thing for a year but there's no guarantee I wouldn't be in the same boat next year.... still, that's probably the best alternative; going back every 3 months for an extension until next year. I doubt I can install all the 2005 Honda smog stuff (that nice looking header wouldn't pass..) I have a couple other options but they're a little roundabout.... Last resort, I live close to Buttonwillow & Willowsprings Raceway and it may just be a trackday car for a year. Though I was really looking forward to taking it to the MotoGp race in Monterey this July:nonod: .
Mondo
Just an update on registration as I now have the car. I've had mixed results on extensions with the local DMV but I think I've got it sorted to get extensions thru this year and take another shot at SB100 Jan-09:cool: Went to the State DMV referee, as required, last week. Figured it would be an exercise to see exactly what it would take to be smog legal in the Golden State. Well it's pretty much impossible to put a late model (DBII smog type) engine in a different car. Besides, stock or CARB approved intake/exhaust (manifold to catalytic converter) and stock gas evap system (charcoal cannister), the computer has to register no trouble lights, this even includes things not emissions related like a speedometer error *even though you have a working speedometer in the dash). Plus stock gas tank & rear differential are required.. Seems to me things would be much simpler and just as effective if they would only require the tailpipe to meet the limits and allow a generic type of gas evaporation system for fuel vapors. Even if you had to weld on the tank neck, with it's special gas cap set up. Oh well, too much common sense I guess. I'd be very leery of purchasing any car already registered in another state unless it's registered as a "pre72" car or uses an engine block from that year or earlier. I'm pretty confident things will work out in January (at least odds-wise). So it's happy trails for now, even got the car insured with the same restrictions as my other cars:thumbs:

Why? I got the impression that it is the same process of getting an SB100 exemption as if it is a kit car

roll a 7
Can you try to register it by the body? It does bear resemblance to a Lotus 7, upon which it is obviously based. If the ref will sign off on that you can register it as a 1960 Lotus 7 with the SPCNS designation. That would exempt you from smog regs. SB100 allows the builder to choose whether the car is registered by the engine block OR the chassis. Choose the chassis and show the ref a a copy of an old Lotus 7 road test. MoPho
I don't think it matters, does it? How are people registering Ariel Atoms and Nobles which are new chassis designs and new engines?
rv-4mike
Try going on the Atom forum and asking how to register one. That topic is forbidden because the guys who are doing it are cheating. Some are bluffing their way through SB100. I dont know how many Nobles are in the state but there are only a couple of Atoms. One belongs to Jay Leno who has the $ to make it happen one way or another. The two guys I have met personally both are registered in Arkansas where you can register anything. If those guys ever get pulled over and cant prove they have a legal Arkansas address I think they are in for trouble. You cant try to bluff your way past SB100 by calling it a 1960 Lotus. DMV is wise to that. You cant register out of state and then bring it to CA and try to change to a CA plate. They are wise to that too. SB100 is the only guaranteed no hassle way to register in CA. I am planning to register in AZ where I have some property and a legal address. CA requires you to register in CA if you reside in CA more than 6 months of the year, but I think I could argue that it's my AZ car and I just brought it over for a drive if I ever get hassled about it. CA, the just say no state. I cant wait to retire and get the hell out of here.

I am doing the same registering it in AZ, but I had planned to change it over when the Jan rolls around. There is someone on the Cal seven forum who did register a Birkin in CA that came from AZ. Mondo
MoPho, When I read the law it said you can't take a car that's already been registered and apply for SB100. It's one or the other when first registering the car. I think that's to keep people who have the emissions equipment from modifying their car. I don't know how they handle already registered cars from another state. They'll require a smog check and I'm sure it won't pass the car or motor's model year (that's why people buy out of state cars with a pre 72 registration title, though it's technically illegal). Hopefully, they will give you the option to register SB100 in January. I imagine people move here with this issue all the time. Without SB100 you have to register by year of car, which can be the year the replica represents or the engine; whichever is newer. That's how cobras can get registered... because the small block ford has been around that long. SB100 lets you get by with just the year the replica body represents. Technically, a person could put an old pinto motor in a new 7 and register it pre 72. Then, after the referee check and all the paperwork is done, change the motor and since their exempt from smog it would never be checked again:leaving: . As far as Jay Leno or someone with a lot of cars and $$$... I always thought you could just start a car sale business (if your a collector you probably buy - sale anyway) and throw a dealer plate on any car you wanted to take out for a spin. MHKflyer52
MoPho, You should not have any trouble as your car is registered in NJ and you purchased it their. That is were the money transferred so the sale is from NJ and all you should have to due is pay the sales tax and get it smoged and transfer the title and registration into Calif. because the car has already been registered and titled else where in another state. It is like you purchased a 2000 what ever in another state and brought it home with you. If you were to place my Outback that was purchased in Oregon next to an Outback that was sold here in Calif the same year and month that I purchased mine in Oregon the only differance is that their is a sticker on the radiator support that states the car is a Calif Smog Cert Car whish means that the tune is just a little different and it runs a little leaner and hotter. Heck when I had it smoged the smog shop tech told me that my car passed with out any problems and runs cleaner that most of the new cars on the road from what he could see from his equipment and the test he had to run. The DMV is going to ask for a smog cert and check the vin to match the title that you should have and the registration from the other state and then the clerk is going to want to know how much you paid so that they can compute the sales tax for Calif. so make sure you have all of that info when you go into the DMV to register in in Calif. Also make sure you have proof of insurance for the new car so that you can give them a copy at the DMV or you will get a letter from SAC saying that the DMV dose not have any proof that the car is insured and that you registration will be suspended until you provide the necessary paperwork to them in SAC. This is what I had to due with my 7 , Porsche, Ford truck, Sabaru, MG and RV when we moved to SoCal from Oregon. I think it took all of an hour at the local DMV. MoPho
Sounds like an SB 1578 is needed for previously registered cars http://www.californiacaterhamclub.com/chat/showpost.php?p=2908&postcount=

But as you mentioned to me before, your seven was previously registered as a 60's vehicle. Orange is registered as a 2004, so it is not the same and since the car does not have all the smog equipment associated with a new car it can't be smogged like a newer car brought in from out of state, it won't pass the smog test, both visually or with the sniffer. As noted, it is not going to prevent me form getting it on the road since I have "another home where I live for 7 months of the year", but I would like to get an SB exemption for the car before they stop offering this provision
