Hate to see that. There's a guy over on BlatChat who built a beautiful Ferrari P3 (I think) replica a few years ago with a 348 or 355 engine. Second time out it developed a fuel leak and burned to the ground.

We have a local guy who has a few hundred cars (no exaggeration) in his yard. You know the type.........cars everywhere. A good friend went to this guys place to buy an old Europa from him. The seller wanted to prove that it ran well so went to start the car for the buyer. The buyer still had his money in his pocket when the seller got the car running. They smelled something and looked to see a fuel line leaking onto the exhaust. Before they could do anything the car was fully engulfed and burned to the ground. A wad of burned fiberglass and metal.

My friend the seller was pretty happy that he still had his money in his pocket. That old Europa is still there. The would be no way to tell what it is....or was.

Bummer,

Dave

So if you ever wondered if you should mount a fire extinguisher, here's your answer--if not for you then maybe someone else. Not sure what happenend, but it may have been saved if there was one around. Friend of mine almost lost his favorite ride--a good samaritan came along with one and saved his car--he now carries one!! He originally didnt want one because "it will add weight and throw off the car's balance!"

if it was a fuel on exhaust fire, it may be hard to save even with an extinguisher

IIRC it was a fuel injection hose or pressure regulator connection that let go and sprayed the engine compartment. The alternator may have ignited it.

Maybe a big fat permanently installed extinguisher could have helped but I don't know.....

I wonder what is left on that car that is worth anything? Looking at the photos you can see that one of the front suspension springs got hot enough that it softened and sagged. If it was that hot outside the engine compartment it's hard to believe that the chassis didn't twist too. If the chassis is twisted I should think that the only thing of value is the rear end.

I'm surprised the price has gotten as high as it has. The BIN is out of sight.

Scary stuff.

I would hope to believe that who ever is buying this would be smart enough to realize that the frame is mostl likely junk due to the annealing of the steel.

I cannot see how the chassis would be an good after something like this.

It is amazing that this is selling for more than $2000.00. Even then it still is requiring a few thousands to get this back to road worthyness.

Please tell me no one from here was that desprate to buy this thing?

It was bid to $3050 but the "reserve not met" means that it it didn't meet the seller's minimum bid. In other words it didn't sell. I think the seller could try to negotiate with the highest bidder or try relisting it with the same or lower reserve. It would be interesting to see the car in person to try to determine what would actually be salvageable. Maybe it has a Quaife tranny, lightweight flywheel, or some other good stuff, but I don't recall seeing it mentioned in the ad. There's certainly a lot of scrap metal there!
