breezy7
1: Need suggestions for oil filters for a Zetec. I have been tried a few that are used on a Ford Focus SVT but the body of the filter is too long and run into problems getting the filter off for an oil change. I can't get a cap wrench on the filter because of the engine mount and my strap wrench is not much better,it crushes the filter if not in the right spot. The body of the filters is around 5 inches long so am looking for something shorter. First time I got lucky(?) by sticking a screwdriver through the filter and turning it off but yesterday ended up pulling the intake manifold off and working from above. Such language on a Sunday. 2: Am getting ready to change engine coolant but do not see a block drain. Where is it? Hope its not under the intake manifold! I have always waited for a hose to blow... don't they all come with this "auto draining" feature? :jester: All kidding aside, I haven't blown a hose since the Raceline water rail was put in...I also do about 1% of the work on my car, so I wouldn't know...sorry. Davemk1
I've never seen a drain on my ZX1. I use the lovely "loosen a hose and slide it off slowly and get the fluid all over your shirt sleeve and floor" technique. Is there another way? dave
pksurveyor
My Caterham uses Purolator L17603 on the 147 hp Zetec. The oil filer is for Renault R4, R5, R9, and R11. It is less than 2-1/2 inch tall.
slomove
I've never seen a drain on my ZX1. I use the lovely "loosen a hose and slide it off slowly and get the fluid all over your shirt sleeve and floor" technique. Is there another way? dave Yup, I took the aluminum tube that goes across from the radiator return and tapped an 1/8" NPT thread (IIRC) into the wall at the lowest place when installed. Then I bought one of the small brass coolant drain cocks at the auto store and threaded it in. Since the aluminum wall is pretty thin I used a generous bead of metal weld epoxy outside to seal and strengthen the thread. With a short piece of tube in the outlet this make draining a snap. Takes a while with the small cock but very easy. Holding up for 5 years now so I guess it works.... Gert

haiku88
I'm using a Napa Gold 1394 oil filter (which is actually a rebadged Wix 51394)) per a tip on the Birkin list, very small so no clearance problems...this model is also specd for the Prius. From what I've read Napa Gold/Wix filters are high quality
