Hushpower Pro muffler

I tried a Hushpower 2 muffler and liked it but was not crazy about the looks, so I sent Hushpower an email to see if they had any plans to make a 2.5" version of the Pro model (3" is the smallest currently). Turns out they do, should be released towards the end of the year, and much to my surprise they sent me one to try in exchange for some feedback and photos.

Anyway....got it on the car and am very happy with it, power is good and the sound level is reasonable if the car is driven conservatively (also at cruise speed). It was too loud for me with a side exit but OK with a rear exit pipe and I also like the looks (BTW, the short section of flex pipe is temporary...) The can does stay reasonably cool as advertised so there is no need for a heat shield.

We have the 3" model on Mojito and it is much improved over the other mufflers we have had on the car. The muffler does stay amazingly cool even better with a ceramic coating on it. I have to agree that at cruising speed it is acceptable and it wakes up when you get on it. I would recommend it. They also sent us one for free to try and give feedback which we did.

Is the Hushpower noticeably quieter than your previous exhaust? Have you run it on a dyno for a power comparison? Was it necessary to reprogram your ECU, if you are using one?

I would like to make the switch from my Caterham supplied 5" catalytic conv unit to something less restrictive AND quieter. If I need to reprogram my ECU on a dyno I'm willing to do so, if I can be reasonably certain that the car will be quieter and gain some power. My dream of increased power comes from a conversation with an ex Caterham employee who said that ditching the cat conv system would be less restrictive and usually resulted in a gain of 12-20 HP. If I get some extra power without noise reduction it will be a problem.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The Raceco.co.uk solution looks good because it is light, but would require a heavy sum to be transported to the UK for the 7" can plus freight. Hence, a USA solution would be preferable, if it works.

The Hushpower is quieter and has a better tone than the stock Birkin muffler, which was blown out (I dissected it). Power feels good by seat of the pants, but have not had the car on a dyno. My car has a Dunnell ECU which is programmed for a free flowing exhaust and did not require reprogramming...good thing since this is not possible at a user level. Not much info on the web on the HP Pro, but Vintage Motorsport did a review in the May/June issue

BTW, if you want to quiet your car adding a resonator might be an option, Summit Racing carries several. I'm thinking of trying this myself, supposedly also makes the tone deeper and less raspy too, will post the resuts if I do.

As you can see my assesment of West tex was correct! NOT RIGHT!

I'm sure TC and SC will not be enough... Stay tuned for his next upgrade... JATO..

Too Bad you are in the wrong side of the country, or you could hear how quiet my BURNS STAINLESS system is on my Birkin. It is a straight through system that can be repacked. I repacked mine with Stainless Steel Wool. It was coustom built for the car, prior to me buying the car. I hear more wind noise @ 70 MPH than exhaust. In WOT I hear more intake noise from my TBI's than exhaust. The total weight with short turned out tail pipe and short front pipe is 10 LBS. I'm told they are a little costly though. BURNS is out your way.

Auger style muffler?

Burns also makes "drag racing mufflers" that are 2 lbs each. I'm curious how much they actually reduce the exhaust sound though. I think about $250 each.

Auger style muffler are pretty popular with side piped v8 exhaust system. Simple, and based on what I've heard, minimal power loss.

Here is what the muffler looks like. you just weld it inside a pipe. It has a straight through section, and the rest of the gases go around the auger part.

You can cut them to length for your application... I have not seen any dyno data for them though.

Mazda,

A lot of the Superstalker guys are using these. Still pretty loud in my opinion. We did DB test at the Stalker Ambush post 7-7-7. Several of us running glass packs were at a lower DB by several points than those running the Auger style silencer.

Just gave hushpower a call, and Dan (extension 451) didnt recall them making a 2.5" hushpower pro, but sold me on the hushpower II. If you want someone to talk exhaust to (kinda a gearhead pay chat?) give them a call. Seemed to be very knowledgeable!

He recommended the 2" HP II's for my ~110 hp 2.4L toyota engine. I like torque, so that or the 2.25" sound pretty good to me.

Hushpower II's are insulatated too, the outside shell stays relatively cool. Nice when its right next to your thigh.

I used them on my buggy and my locost. Not very light though and I hear only good to 400hp.

they don't sell the 2'5" HP Pro YET, but will later this year....I was given a 2.5" sample as I said in my original post..:7fume:

I have a 2.5" HP 2 I tried first (and paid for)that I would sell cheap if anyone is interested..

Jack, what length auger were you guys running. What about power drop? Are the ones using them happy with them?

Mazda,

Sorry, I did not see your post until today...workin' my butt off on LOG 28!!!

I think the length of the auger is about 18". It is the same one that Speedway Motors has and was referenced in the previous post. It is fairly straight through with hardly any pressure drop. I would call the sound "raw". My guess is that when you are really pushing the loud button it will exceed 100db.

Here is a copy of the test that John Meyers conducted at our Ambush in Helen, GA the week following 7-7-7.

Hush power was rated pretty high.

The test vehicles were all Stalkers with some being Supercharged 3800 and some 3.4 NA.

I don't think you notice any power drop with the Auger style.
