Hitching a ride...

Building off Steve T's recent post about giving a charity ride, and the notion of "Sevangelism" that I touched on over the summer (spreading the word about our cars and community)...I think we should have a section of the forum that allows future owners to find current owners so that they can get a test ride and see a car up close.

It's definitely happening already, but perhaps the forum can be used to make finding like minded people easier? I don't know if we should make a "sticky" thread out of this one or even put it in a different section.

Just a thought.

One thing everyone can do is to make sure their location is properly filled in.

People usually start their search for cars like ours by first browsing forums (without even joining). If they see someone close to them has a car like that, it increases the likelihood that they'll jump in.

To update your location, from the top menu, go to "other", then "Settings", then "Edit Profile"

I think it's a very good thought, Al. However it is implemented I think fundamentally it is about:

a) making it easy for people who may not yet be active participants to find an example of the car they're interested in near them, and

b) making it clear to them to not be shy about asking an owner they don't know for a ride. As has been pointed out, most of us love the opportunity to show off our cars and give rides (any excuse for a blat, right? http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/biggrin5.gif )

It could be a dedicated "score-a-ride" section, or just the ability to easily search/sort the members database, or even the threads in the "Members Rides" section, by location and/or car type. If for whatever reason a member doesn't want people contacting them for a ride, maybe there could be a way to opt-out of the search results. (No idea how difficult any of that would be to implement, mind you).

Anyway, my $0.02.

I love the idea. Maybe instead of making the seeker scroll thru hundreds of names and locations. We could have and area call "hitch a ride" They just sign up and put in their location and members can just look on the list and see if there someone in need in close proximity.

Or have a section broken down by states. Members who are willing to give rides can put their contact info down. And then the prospective owner could choose from that list.

Good ideas guys. How about if I just make a sticky thread here asking for people who are interested in getting a ride to post.

If are interested in giving a ride, you subscribe to that thread, so when there is a new post, you will get an email to check it out.

To keep number of emails down, we'll have to have some self-control to not have alot of back and forth discussion on that thread.

Thoughts???

I guess I'm in the minority here. I just went through this, being a relative newbie, and scored an intro ride from a local Caterham owner this past weekend (thanks Brad!). Will be taking an Ultralite ride on friday, weather permitting.

Anyway, its the seperate section that I have an issue with. In my opinion a forum with a bunch of different sections for different types of threads is clunky. Just a real pain for the casual browser looking for info. I havent looked at any of the other forum sections than the general section.

My vote? If someone is interested enough in the cars to want a ride, its easy enough to join the forum and post a request in the general section. If it requires some back and forth to coordinate, thats what PMs are for.

My $.02 worth.
