GordonS_7
Hi, I'm a new member to the group. I don't have a Se7en yet, but am EXTREMELY interested in building one. I was just wondering if anyone had an idea of approximately how many members have cars registered for the street in the state of Pennsylvania. After reading a lot of the posts, I understand the reluctance to discuss the topic of registration. However, just knowing that a number of owners have gone through the process successfully would ease my mind as to what I see has the biggest draw back to building a Se7en - I can't imagine anyone could stand the thought of building a car and then not being able to get it registered. I've looked at the process for registering a kit car in PA but actual knowledge of success would be helpful in making my decision. Thanks!
yellowss7
I built my Caterham in 2000 and the registration process then was fairly straight forward. Although the guy at the tag place said "good luck buddy" when I submitted my paperwork. When it came back approved he acted surprised it went thru on the first pass. Today I believe that it is still pretty straight forward, except that now you have to take it to specified garages for the initial inspection. http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/inspections/recon.shtml Where in Pa are you? Jon W.
I've registered 2 cars in PA. One took 6 weeks the other 3 months. There is a formal process. Search the PA DOT website for "Special Construction". The Locost 7 took 6 weeks. The other car, a replica of an exposed frame, English designed roadster with a vigorously protected trademarked name, took 3 months. The best thing about PA is that the cars are emissions exempt so anything goes under the bonnet. Just need to have safety inspection. Edited July 16, 2010 by Jon W. GordonS_7
Tom and Jon, Thank you very much for the quick response. Nice to hear from you. I live in Lebanon County about 30 miles east of Harrisburg. I'm very anxious to get started and I'll be studying the PA regs. Thanks again. yellowss7
Gordon, you should come out to Gettysburg on October 8,9,10 for the Lotus Owner's Gathering. It sounds like there will be a good number of 7's both original and Clones. http://usa7s.com/vb/showthread.php?t=5176
S1Steve
Hey Gordon, Tom had it easy, which is great. I went back and forth with the PA DOT about the photo's I sent, I took the 4 shots that they asked for, but they wanted more. This went on for 2 months, then I got alittle pissed and called my local Congressman. 4 days later I had a title. Just play the game and you'll get thru !!! yellowss7
Ignorance is Bliss Steve. I had no clue that there could be issues titleing the Caterham. Little did I know that my experience was the exception. I really didn't do anything special in the process though. Maybe you used too good of a camera to take pictures of that pretty car of yours. Again that was 10 years ago. Things may have changed. Just makes our cars worth more. :jester: Tom

DeanG
Should we try and set up a forum at LOG about building or titling cars? There aren't many other places where so many Se7en people get together.
GordonS_7
Good evening everyone. Thanks so much for all the feedback! I will certainly plan to attend the Gettysburg show in October. I had just attended the British Invade Gettysburg show with the hopes of running into 1 or 2 Se7en owners, but none were present. The show in October is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks all! RGTorque
hello! i registered my ultralite in 2007 just as the regs were changing. currently you will need to go to a body shop that can handle "reconstructed titles". when there you will need to pass all the criteria of the drive train you used. for example, if you have a 2001 miata motor you will need to have everything a 2001 miata has (obd2 scan port, bumpers, mirrors, turns, etc). i snuck in by registering my 7 ad a 2007 lotus (no model name). someone up in harrisburg was sleeping and i got my title back a ok say LOTUS. i found a friend who "inspected" my car under a dealer tag and since the mileage was under 5000 i avoided the obd2 smog/check engine light check. i would recommend trying this process first because i cant imagine a 7 with all the hardware your doner car will have. best of luck, Roman
