Caterham 13" Wheels & Avon ZZR FS-New

Thx Karl. I was interested in the combo. As I recall my 15" Prisoner wheels w/205/55 RA1's weigh abt 31-32lbs. The tires alone are 20 lbs, per Toyo's website. Given that it's unsprung weight, and rotating weight to boot, those are big pounds.

Karl, are you sure about those weights? I weighed my 6” wheel at 10.5 lb, which is consistent with the first post in this thread on BlatChat that gives the weight at 4.78 kg (10.5 lb) and the 8” at 5.44 kg (12.0 lb). I checked with Avon this morning and they told me that the ZZR weighs 8.5 kg (18.7lb) in both the 185 and 215 sizes. I also asked about the CR500 which is known to be extraordinarily light for a radial and was told the 175/55-13 & 205/55-13 (the nearest sizes) are 6.75 kg (14.9 lb) & 6.94 kg (15.3 lb) respectively.

John,

I'll double check my bathroom sacales, but those were the weights I came up with. Then again, I could be wrong...I was never much of a finish carpenter...

There is a substancial size difference (both section and diameter) between the 185s and 215s, so I would expect there to be a weight differential. The ZZRs feel lighter to me than the CR500s...

Perhaps it's a combination of factors; your scale might be off at the low end, and Avon provided the wrong information. If those tires really are that light though, then I may decide to raise the Westfield a little to maintain ground clearance and go with the ZZRs when the RA-1s wear out.

Karl:

Perhaps weigh yourself holding a wheel/tire combo and then not?

If tires are that much lighter than RA1's (wh/are considered heavy), I'd consider replacing my RA1's with them also, when they wear out. I Googled your tire but was unable to find a weight.

I did a lot of research on tire weights when I replaced my original Pile-ups. The only relatively sticky tire that is even close in weight to the CR500's is the Toyo T1R, which is what I ended up getting. About 1.5 lbs+ lighter than any other tire I could find from any manufacturer.

The T1R's are great on the street, but I am definitely looking forward to something more sticky for the track. I am hoping the smaller/lighter wheel will offset the heavier tire when it comes to ultimate weight.

Karl,

Just curious - Do you know the compound of the set of ZZRs you have (sold)?

No idea of the compound, though I read somewhere it is similar to their slicks, but don't have a reference. They feel nice and sticky to the tuch, but I never put them on the car to try them out.

iirc the CR500 is their A29 compound.

"A29 Very Hard compound for saloon car circuit slick applications"

is the zzr the same?

Mike - I think one of the advantages of the Avon ACB10 is it's weight - or lack thereof. Pretty sure that with a superlight wheel that the total weight would be under 20 lbs.

Maybe someone who has them or used them will be along to confirm or correct.

yup...once you get into a bias ply slick the weight of say the 13x7" are about 10# for the tire versus 18# for a DOT R888. those MB wheels are beautiful. almost anything in that size thats magnesium centered with split aluminum rings are going to be about 7# to 8#. if you're really weight focused, you can go with titanium hardware...but it comes at a cost.

and they really are service items that you have to keep an eye on...cracks, leaks, corrosion, hardware torque etc.

the great thing about the caterham wheels is they are so durable.
