Evo Magazine's Top 50 Driver's Cars

Recommended Posts

Fun article and let the arguments begin. My '08 M3 would hand most of those cars their butts on the track and it's not mentioned. Ditto the 'Vette, not one anywhere in the top 50? I guess US cars were excluded.

I dunno - my 92 Miata has passed all generations of M3 and a C6 Z06 on the track..... It may not be 100% stock 'though.

My M3 in stock form is 6 seconds a lap faster at Putnam Park race track than my Miata was in full race dress (Suspension/motor/Hoosiers, etc.). It helps that I hit 125 mph on the straight and the Miata topped out at abt 105 ph:)). I loved the Miata, but the M3 is more car.

Obviously the article is about being a drivers car, and fun to drive, not which is fastest around a track. The M3 is represented by the E30 and E46 on their list (surprised they picked the 46 over the 36 though).

Corvettes, despite being fast, are not known for being particularly communicative to the driver and the foreign press has always complained about the cars poor chassis tuning for their roads.

Seems I picked well though :D

Original or new they both give a driver a lot of car and a lot of fun for the money and both are so forgiving of being driven to their limit and past that even us "kind of decent" drivers have a real fun day behind the wheel. Also, underpowered as it was, the MGA was probably the best "fun and friendly" car an over adventurous teen age idiot (me) ever got behind the wheel of. Just my bucks worth, I'm sure we all feel that way about something that got left off. Maybe it should have been "50 best drivers car from each decade". LOL.

My dad had an MGA and he loved it. Despite its mechanical simplicity. I wish it hadn't been T-boned long before I was born :o(

BTW I dont think this list is about which car is fastest through a corner. Its about which car feels best. With some considering price, others considering pure fun-- price be damned. Lotus certainly represents well!

MOPHO has the great curent pick but through 49 years of owning cars I had a chance to "go through" owning some I REALLY wish I still had. Three MGA's, '57 cevy Belair hardtop with factory dual quads and three on the tree (yes, Hearst Shifter with syncro lock was my first mod on that one) '55 chevy Belair convertible that I transplanted a small block into to replace the 6-powerglide it came with, '59 morgan that came and went because I couldn't afford to keep it running and a few "lesser" others that were fun or just nice. Now I just plan on keeping the current pack, unless something really inviting come up, and watch my friends trade through the "done that, what's new" game. LOL.
