Flowmaster recommended this one: Hushpower 13016100 Pro Series Muffler Any other solutions? turboeric Posted September 20, 2011 Share Posted September 20, 2011 No direct experience, but I know from playing with my son's RX7 that a rotary will destroy any muffler that isn't stuffed with stainless. Dropped from 109 db to 95db as measured at Laguna Seca. The shell is cooler though it is has a significant gradient with the front part of the muffler being a lot warmer that the rear section. Is anything quieter than that but still "sporty" worthy of a 7? I drive with a helmet and custom earplugs so the sound level isnt too bad for me. Hushpower will make you any custom muffler you want so I would recommend that you ask them to make one that will fit your specific needs. I just bought the stainless pro model on Amazon for $139.00 and free Prime shipping, but would return it if I could get someone to build me a bigger one. I recently put an Ultraflow SS unit on my Zetec Birkin and it has a low, aggressive, loud tone. :banghead: It sounds better than the blare of a burnt out Factory Birkin exhaust but it is too loud for my taste. m Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
speedwagon Posted September 21, 2011 Share Posted September 21, 2011 have a 13b with a weber 48 and it was loud, now has two "turbo" style mufflers in series, noise is down to a reasonable level but so is power, and exhaust heat burns anyone who rides, being on the passenger side. my planned fix is a turbo-ll and a side pipe with heat shield and a short running board over it. Have also considered an oval 3" tail pipe as my car is almost all street and raised to be able to clear the 4" rocks that appear out of no where and get straddled. for keeping the NA would suggest the longest muffler that will fit between the wheels, either flowmaster type with baffles or with stainless wool that can be replaced. One other tip that came to me is to only use just enough octane ,(i run regular) as a rotary will be still burning the "slow" fuel in the exhaust creating more heat there. that said; i an not a rotary expert. Call their special projects division and they will be able to suggest the correct sizing for your application and fab it up for reasonable prices (mine was $199). Also I should mention that while car was listed at 95 db at Laguna we do believe that the majority of the noise is now from the intake rather than the exhaust but I have not yet tried a different intake to test the theory. MichaelD Posted September 22, 2011 Share Posted September 22, 2011 I replaced my stock Caterham muffler with a Hushpower. I chose it for its' small size and lighter weight. Thus far I have found it to be conversive at casual speeds and still sounds great at track speeds. Yes, I can still hear my iPod at highway speed. super7guy Posted September 22, 2011 Share Posted September 22, 2011 On the subject of mufflers, my next try is using the C5 Corvette titanium muffler. The cut down muffler weighs (guess what 7 lbs). I will tuck it under the clam shell. I now have a spiral muffler and Ultraflow. When I was running the BDA, it required two Ultraflow mufflers. I also have a custom made alloy airbox which directs the intake noise into the cabin. Remember, at the "Q", we are limited to 93db @ 50 ft.
