Importing Race cars to the US

Is anyone on here an expert on importing cars to the US? I have an 1987 race car in Australia that I want to bring to the US so I can use it more often. 1987 is 24 years and therefore does not meet the 25 year rule. However, as it is not a road registerable vehicle anyway does the the 25 year rule apply?

Of course I could just go ahead and wait another year....:hat:

I did read up a bit on this and providing the car was made as a race car and has a manufacturers certificate stating that, the is a good chance it would be OK. If a road car converted and less than 25 years then probably not. I know sevens do not count as race cars but y are talking single seater type then maybe.

As you say, just wait another year!

Mike,

I am not the expert, but I do know that alot has to do with if it is to be a street car,

or not in your case.

I read a while ago , ( Sports Car Market) that Australia has an export law about shipping special, important,

cars out of the country ???

Just wait till you have to deal with the Teamsters and paperwork at the Newark port.

Bring lots of Cash. And or hire a import Agent... Good Luck.

That is a very helpful link to the rules. I think The Stig hit the my problem squarely - I have a road car that was converted to racing use. It was never "manufactured" as a race car. Making it even murkier is that it is a 1985 body shell with everything else upgraded to 1989 manufacturer homologation specs. And of course the engine paperwork looks like it was 2006 as that was when it was rebuilt after I grenaded it.

Tom - I dont think you need to worry about getting out on the track with me. After all you are not in my class! :p

It looks similar to this (not my car):

And some correct period racing footage with a best driver around racing them:
