sunday wake up call

7.30 this morning - loud, intermittent 'roaring' noise. Sounded like some weird creature... grabbed the camera only to find this out back of the house...

Wide angle lens, so was much closer than it looks - was even able to have a chat with the passengers from my deck. Very cool, will have to try that one day...

One of those made an emergency landing in a friend's back yard a few years ago. She loaned them some tools and they got it fixed. Took her along for the rest of the ride in her bathrobe and her hair in curlers!

Her husband slept through the whole thing and was quite suprised when she came in the front door slightly tipsy from the champagne customary for first flights. He hadn't even noticed she was missing.

We have a lot of hot air balloons in our area, and there's even a festival of some kind.

Last year, we heard the same roaring and ran outside to see two balloons nearly touching down in our field...they changed their minds at the last second (only a few feet above the deck)...kids loved it.

My wife bought me a ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday a few years ago, and it was great fun. ( No she didn't try to shoot it down)

What was interesting was how quiet it was when the burners were not on. Floating along at a 100 -200 feet over peoples homes, you could hear people talking in their yards, and you could talk to them. It really surprised tham when you said hello, and thay had not heard the balloon.

Landing is simply a controlled crash. The higher the wind speed the less controlled the landing.

I saw Snoopy air ship land once... very funny procedure. basically they navigated it close to the ground, with a rope hanging off of it... then the ground crew would chase the rope and hang on for dear life, and eventually tie it to a pole.

There has never been a good movie featuring a hot air balloon! :ack:

Rob

True Rob, but there's an amusing little film called 'Danny Deckchair' based, I think on that guy in California who strapped a bunch of balloons to a deckchair, filled them with Helium and ... up, up and away... Next thing, he's at 12,000 feet and into the LAX landing pattern

The guy made into the 'Darwin Awards' - one of the few to make the list who actually survived (my favorite still is the guy who strapped a rocket to the back of his Chevvy Nova to see how fast it would go...)
