Old Yellow
I just got my new set of Hoosier 13' X 10 slicks mounted today. They sure are getting expensive. alomost $200 bucks each plus shipping. It will be interesting to see if the 255hp rotary will spin them in second gear now that I have replaced the 5:33 rear end with the stock 4:10 Supra rear gearing. I was always running out of rpm in second gear on the autocross course. It would be also be interesting to see how the LS1 engined Rotus and my rotary would compare woth your approximate 50hp difference. Mine weighs 1525lbs. I would imagine that it will be hard to to get traction on the LS1 powered car.
slngsht
Joe, I'll take mine to the drag strip and run a 1/8 th mile to see what she does. I KNOW i'll get kicked off if I run 1/4 mile without a 6 point roll bar. But first I have to get more and softer rubber. As it stands right now, the tires won't even hold in 4th gear. Without tires I'll run a really good trap speed, but not a great time. In third, I can spin 'em at 2500 RPM, just going down the highway and going past 1/2 throttle. In 4th, the tires hold for a while, but once the engine gets past 3000-3500 range, they start slipping again. It's alot of fun. I think my clutch master cylinder died today, so I have to fix that before getting on the road again.
Old Yellow
I ran mine one time about f years ago before bumping up the power but I don't remember what it ran and I was using some 15" 10 year old slicks. I do remember I left a supercharged nitro injected Nissan 240 in the dust but what that means I don't know. It seems that I ran about 8.0 sec does that sound about right??? It's just been too long and I don't do the drag strip just autocross. That was in another life about 40 years ago. I don't have any 13" wheels that I could put a street tire on the front with. I don't think it would be helpful to run with 10' sticky slicks on the front. Mabybe one of these days I will go to the junk yard and try to find a couple of rims that will fit the Toyota hubs. slngsht
Joe, the number I have heard to estimate your quarter mile time based on 1/8 mile time is 1.54... An 8 second 1/8 mile run translates to 12.3 quarter mile, which is a very respectable time. Ofcourse it could be off by a few tenths based on traction, top end power, etc... Old Yellow
Thanks Mazda, I think my time was a little over 8.0 on my best run but I shut it off a little early so my time was probably in the very low 12's related to a 1/4 run then. I had a case of the dumbs and though I had passed the finish line. I would like to get my Triumph TR8 coupe down in the 12's with the 4.6l rover engine I will be installing during the restoration. My stock convertable runs the 1/4 in about 15s. I do remember that the guys that were with me said the the announcer made a funny comment about the car but after I took off he retracted it and commented on the 60 foot time which was pretty very fast but again I don't remember what it was. The cars being pretty light will just jump off the line if you can get traction. What are you going to do with the 4.6l engine I gave you now that you put the LS1 in it? I'm going to get the rotary from Tom that you gave us and keep it for a spare as Tom isn't going to put it in his Locost now. He's going to put a 1.8l Miata in it in place of the 1.6l Ford. slngsht
I traded the 4.6 to get the LS1. I did about a month of calling around. I talked to your guy up in the north east, as well as the guys in Michigan. By the time I added up all the $$$ to make some real power out of that engine, it was way cheaper to go the LS1 route. With the LS1 deal, fuel injection, multiple coil ignition and 6 speed tranny were included, so it was hard to pass up. If your slicks had any life at all when you ran your 60 foot times, I bet you were down in the 1.5-1.7 range.
Old Yellow
Mazda, That sounds familiar and 1.6 even more familiar. I just don't do the drag thing I'm not set up for it. We did a couple of drag events with the autocross club but the last time I went all I could do was spin tires at the start. I sold my 15" rims that had the slicks on them so all I have outside of the 13" slicks now is non sticky 15" street tires. Your right on making power with the Rover engine. You can get 300hp from it fairly easy though. I have several Rover engines here 4.0 and 4.6 ones. I'm going to take the pistons out of a 4.0 and put them in a 4.6 which will bump my compression up to about 10.5, balance it and put in a cam with a little rumble along with a appropriate 4bbl carb. The engine is light being all aluminum and the newer heads have bigger valves than the older heads. I will port them a little and match the intake and exhaust ports also which are always not right. That should be enough power for the Triumph car for street use and turn a few heads along with it. Besides that it's a straight bolt in with no changes needed anywhere. Maybe a bigger radiator would help. Joe
slngsht
Speaking of the radiator, that is a concern of mine with the LS1. I drove it to work and back yesterday. it was in the mid 60s in the afternoon, and I got caught in pretty heavy rush hour. Temps held steady at 200 (thermostat is 198). So far so good. The real test is in the summer though. BTW, I did like the sound of the Rover better than the LS1. LS1 has a different firing order than previous GM engines, so it sounds different. Old Yellow
After I modified the Rotary I had to have dual pass radiator made. I got it thru one of the NASCAR suppliers here. It was a tight fit ans I ended up with a opening at the bottom that I need to put something in sometime to direct the full flow of ait to it. The original toyota radiator had a similar air dam behind the grill. It cost me around $500 or so to have one custom made. Joe
slngsht
Mine came with a Griffin aluminum radiator - i think 3 core, but not sure. From the factory, the fans on LS1s are set to come on at 226 F, so as long as she stays south of 230, it'll be alright.
