Gert & Stan's Memorial Day Blat

Recommended Posts

Gert (slomove) and I did a desert/mountain blat this weekend here in S. California. I drove Saturday only, and Gert and his wife Rosie (sp?) made it a two day event and they are probably on the road as I type. Hopefully he will add more about his adventure when he gets home (hint, hint...). Even on a busy Memorial weekend you can find nearly deserted roads here in California. Temperatures were a little warm though, I'm estimating it was about 95 degrees Saturday afternoon once I got down to the lower desert elevations.

That's Gert ahead of me:

Our lunch destination, Lake Isabella:

Now you know who "The Gert" is.

Wish I had gotten a better picture of Rosie:

After lunch, we seperated and I took the desert route home alone. I stopped at Randsburg, an old ghost town. It was too hot to stay very long:

My total mileage for the day was 348. The last 100 miles looked like this:

At that point I really wanted A/C and cruise control! :ack:

I can't see the visuals because I'm logging in from dial up.

But I appreciate the trip report - keep 'em coming from all coasts...especially if two or more cars get together.

Alas, Orange is in getting the water rail put in and the SoftBits hood retrimmed so you can actually see the Wolo when the top is on. So no blatting for me until end of next week.

Thanks again Stan!

Well, I did about 500 miles total both days with only 20 miles major highway. But what a beautiful trip! In spite of the holiday weekend no traffic whatsoever. Yes, it was a little warm in the lower areas: we stayed over in Delano and it was 102 degrees there in the afternoon. A shower can be a life saver after such a trip :)

Here some more pictures (actually in the mountains it was nice, maybe 75 to 80 degrees):

Yes, I got the cows, too.

And the lake.

This is Montain Road 50, driving out of the Kern River Canyon:

Here 3 pictures from the fabulous Cerro Noroestre Rd, 35 miles undulating road, no other car and no police :)

You'll need one of these to help with the cows for your next mod

Mazda, I don't know......might disturb the classic lines of a Seven.

On the other hand, other people have used a cow-catcher before:

Looks like a fun time for sure!

Slomove - Seems like I know the original owner of your Birkin. I saw him for the first time this year at a recent autocross when he came over to check out the finished Locost. He started talking about the fellow that bought his car and all the mods he had done to it. Then he mentioned that the guy's name was Gert, and I thought, "I know who that is".

I remember seeing that Birkin of yours at local autocross events several years ago. It was a little inspiration for my own project...that eventually got completed some years later. :)

Hi Jeff, looks like you met Maury. Very nice guy, I bought his car early 2003.

I know he did some autocross with it but in 5 years of ownership he put only 600 miles on the clock. Not a dent and not a speck of dust or oil anywhere. I don't know how he did that. I came back from last weekend only and the engine compartment and the cockpit are dirty all over again, rock chips in the nosecone gel coat and one more crater in the windshield. But then, Maury had the Seven and his Porsche parked in his sparkling clean garage on 4 small towels. So I bought a pretty much new car :)

Gert,

Maury is very particular about things and most anything he own is immauculate. The low milage Birkin is typical for him. I am not sure which P-car he had there, but he has autocrossed a 914 for many years that looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor and is still all original. His current pride and joy is a white Cayman.

Nice photos but I wounder what is inside of that building or what is was used for.

I'm not sure, but hopefully nothing of value is inside as I'm sure the building will collapse any day now! Here are some photos of the town from the official Randsburg web site:

Stan-For some reason, I had always assumed your car was black...in the hard sun of the California desert you can see the green. Pretty. And I love that both you guys have those grills with a more stylized "7".
