Rettedm
How does one tell if a DeDion car has a Limited Slip Differential? What brands are commonly fitted and how to distinguish each? Thanks ! Dave
RGTorque
burnout... if 1 tread no lsd. if 2, then lsd.
MHKflyer52
Easiest way is to just light the rear wheels up in a straight line and see if one spins or if two spin..............just kidding as I have no real idea as to what differentials are put into the Caterhams and Birklins and Westfields or any 7 with a DeDion rear suspension or even independent rear suspension as I think there are several different for each make differential and model 7. I think you would have to know what make the rear differential is in the vehicle in order to determine if it is a limited slip without lighting up the rear wheels under power. :driving:
jlumba81
Jack up rear of car. Put in neutral and spin 1 wheel by hand. If both move in the same direction you have a lsd. On an open diff the other wheel will spin in the other direction.
scannon
I believe that until recently the deDion cars used the Ford Sierra differential. My '04 came with an open Sierra diff and I added a Quaiffe LSD to it. The Ford Sierra diff has been superseded with the BMW 1 series differential. dallasdude
I thought they had changed to BMW's also, but I was with a dealer with two new Caterhams over the weekend....and the diffs were definately Sierras. This image is from Road and Race and shows the types, but requires you remove an axle to look inside. If you jack up one wheel with a torsen (Quaife).....it will just roll freely like an open dif. Chart does not show a Titan, but I doubt many Caterhams in the US have them.
scannon
I saw the BMW diffs in a number of cars at Caterham USA this summer and was told the Sierra diffs are no longer available new. The good part is they use an adapter to bolt right in in place of the Sierra diff so if you need a replacement down the road just find a junkyard with a 1 series or order a new one from from BMW and buy the adapters from Caterham. I don't remember if it takes different halfshafts and driveshaft.
lucky dawg
Not sure which 7 you have, if a Caterham, just check the original order form since the lsd is an extra cost option. If you do not have access to the invoice, Caterham US might.
James A
On my LSD diffs (three of them, two on cars one as a spare) two are stamped with the LSD info and one has a metal tag attached to it with the LSD info. The two that are stamped had a small flat spot filed or ground on them and the info stamped, the metal tag is attached to one of the case bolts on the other one.
