seschm1234 Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 http://www.roadandtrack.com/go/news/videos/evo-best-track-cars-2013 Caterham 620 R, Ariel Atom, etc.
TomF Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Great result for us Chapmaniacs, obviously. But the big story - Subaru really need to build something like that version of the car. I looked up the prices - £7.5k for the whole package (£3.5k for the supercharger, £2.8k for the brakes, and all the other stuff is pretty cheap). So you can get that for £35k? Bargain!
TomF Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 For cars you basically just change the currency symbol from a £ to a $.
Klasik-69 Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 $56,000 for an FR-S/ BR-Z no way. Well our friends on the other side of the pond have socialism to pay for, and for that privilige they add on a VAT of around 40%. A Honda CRV-EX which sells in the US for around $30,000 sell over there for around $47,000. Some goods have a smaller VAT, some have more. In almost all cases, it's burried into the final cost so it's difficult to know how much they're adding. A Porsche TT sells for $200,00 base price in the UK vs. $131,000 here. However, their medical care is nearly free. Trade off ?
TomF Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 VAT is 20% for everything except things like food. And yes, it's included in the quoted price, as opposed to the US where they quote the pre-tax price.
scannon Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 A lot of the British vendors give a VAT included price and a price without VAT as when they ship outside of England they do not have to add the VAT.
Klasik-69 Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 TomF, you're correct about the VAT. They just increased it from 17.5% to 20%. Not sure how they get a Honda CRV EX up to $49,000 with jut 20% tax. Recent BBC Top Gear quoted the vehicle between 17,000 & 30,000 BP. In any case, off the subject, Caterham is king of the hill, above & beyond the Ariel Atom, which really surprised me. However, it was the top of the line R600. I happen to agree with their conclusion
TurboWood Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 It's always nice to be on the winning team. I wish they would give more information about why it was better than the atom. I guess the message here is 330hp is gooood in a 7 . Daniel
TomF Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 From people I've talked to who have driven both, the Atom is much like an old-style 911 - the heavy tail makes it exciting but a bit twitchy on the limit. Evo has preferred the Cayman to the 911 for some time - they say the inherent stability means you can drive it up to and beyond the limit without being quite so paranoid. And I suspect the same applies here - we all know how easy and fun it is to step a Seven's tail out because it comes back so readily.

TurboWood Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 Yes, anything we buy from the UK while in the US is VAT free. Daniel
jimrankin Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 The VAT looked like a huge bite until I realized I'm in a nearly half that rate state and don't seem to get a lot back for the money. And, a 2 mile trip in an ambulance will run you about $12,000 for your overnight stay in the hospital that will run another $18,000. That's if you happen to work and pay taxes so have something to lose. If you chose to not work then the exact same ride and stay will cost you nothing. Gee, my 10% is getting somebody something after all, just not me.
