Bought on a whim. '97 Saab 96 Two Stroke Project Car

You guys are cracking me up. :D

 

If I were going to go for significantly more power I have a nice 1.8 Miata engine and most of the parts I would need to turbo it gathering dust in my shop. But I cannot see myself going through the huge task of converting it to rear wheel drive.

 

A Subaru WRX engine and transaxle would be a much more logical choice.

 

I want to get it on the road with the two stroke and see what living with a slow, noisy car with a smelly engine is like. I have plenty of fast cars

 

I think to withstand the torque of a V8 you would need to drop that body on a more substantial frame.

I will do that but it might be closer to a fart than a blat. I do want to put a glasspack muffler on it to see what it sounds like.

As another poster mentioned you need an expansion chamber or preferably triple expansion chambers, at full song it's a sound to behold. From about 43 seconds.

I have a '58 DKW wagon with a 3 cylinder 2 stroke. It's a super cool car with a very unique sound. I would never swap out the two stroke. They are way too cool.

I pulled the spark plugs yesterday to put some Rislone in the cylinders in the faint hope it might un-seize the engine. Two of them looked normal but one is crusted with aluminum slag as was the top of the piston visible through the spark plug hole. The engine is toast but I assumed that when I bought the car.

scannon your Saab looks to be in amazing shape. Excellent purchase! The dkw that I mentioned above fired up, no problem, with fresh gas/oil mix after sitting in a field on "the wet coast" for three years. I'm sure you'll have that running in no time.

Yesterday I was perusing the CL Miata offerings and the Saab ad popped up.

 

My curiosity got the best of me and I drove over to have a look at it.

 

The only rust I could find was some bubbles in the lower rear corner of one of the doors. No large dents and the magnet could not detect any bondo. The interior is in pretty good shape. As far as I could see with a flashlight and lying on the ground the bottom is in good condition with no rust holes showing.

 

It has 96k miles. The title says it is a '67 not a '66 as in the ad. It is a one family car since new. It was parked 9 years ago when the engine seized.

 

Asking price was $2,500. I looked at it, negotiated a deal for $1,800 and went home and got the truck and trailer and it is now mine, for better or worse. Talk about buying on a whim.

 

Engine is definitely locked up. Should be a fun project especially if I could find one of the 850 cc Monte Carlo engines with oil injection. I believe the engine in the car is rated at about 42HP, lots of room for improvement.

Just read the engine had a melt down, would have been nice to fire it up without

a rebuild. Oh Well !!!

I think it looks cool stock, wash, wax, road legal and enjoy till it falls apart.

Which hopefully will be many years down the road...

Very clean looking example, don't think I've ever seen a wagon. Looks very similar to my 1000S except no olympic rings on the grill.

You probably know this already, but that engine failure sounds like what happens when you don't free-wheel down hill in two-stroke, as Andy B mentioned.... something to be mindful of once you've done the rebuild. I'm not sure where you're located, but there is mechanic in Portland (MPH Specialties?) who does lots of work on weird and wonderful old two-strokes and other 3 cylinder oddities. Seems like a very good guy.

The guy you need to call for any vintage SAAB information, repair and restoration work is Bud Clark at J & B Imports in Orange, California. He is the single most knowledgeable person on the planet when it comes to the SAAB 2-stroke engine. He knows how to fix them, rebuild the cranks, do performance porting and all the rest.

 

He also knows all there is to know about the transmissions including the ultra-rare SAAB Sport & Rally close-ratio gearboxes.

 

He builds the 2-stroke SAAB engines for my Quantum IV race car. Only seven moving parts in that little marvel. Give him a call at 714-282-7378
