Getting to your first inspection

OK, I've got things working well enough to get to, I think, pass inspection. I need to get it inspected before I can get it titled and licensed. Until I get it licensed and inspected, I can't drive it. So how do I get it to the inspection station? Do I hope nobody notices my lack of plates and drive it there anyway? Do have it towed? Are there inspectors that make house calls?

Depends on your DMV. Some will issue temporary tags to get you through inspections and such, others do not. When I built my Caterham the Colorado DMV was not issuing temps for kit cars, now they do. I had to trailer my car to the Highway Patrol office that did the inspections.

(what scannon said)

In Ct you have to trailer your car to the central inspection station near hartford.

In Nh (transfer) you get a several day temporary permit when you register the car until you're inspected. I'm not sure about Ky but think it was: "hopefully no one notices me"

I was just looking at the Texas DMV site on how to register it. I think I'm going to need to hire a consultant to help me figure it out. I think I'll call the dealership in Dallas tomorrow to see if they can give me some guidance.

Find the local chapter of the Cobra club (for clones). They will have been through the process many times and probably have a writeup on the process.

Found a Texas Cobra club for you. You have to join the club to get access to their FAQ and such but it looks like it is free. http://www.txcobraclub.com/home-mainmenu-1

I still can't thank Ben Wofford enough....He got me a "temporary" CO registration for $15, before I even saw the vehicle. It was to allow me to drive from Caterham USA to Florida, but then allowed me to drive to the FL inspection, which is NOT done in my county. But the FL guys took that CO "temp" registration to consider my Caterham as a "previously registered vehicle" reducing my FL registration problems significantly.

In Illinois, they came to my house! And on a Sunday no less!!!

Do I hope nobody notices my lack of plates and drive it there anyway?
Years ago when I got my Motorcycle endorsement on my drivers License, I had to take a driving test at their facility. The first thing I had to show was that I got the bike there legally - i.e. by trailer or someone else rode it there.

As each state is different, YMMV.

A few weeks ago, I went through TX inspection, titling, and registration with my Westfield. I went to the county tax office (where they issue plates) and for $25, got 30 day temp tags. You also need insurance to drive on public roads. That allowed me to drive to inspection and certified scales. Your first step is to make an appointment with your local "Auto Theft Unit" in the police dep't. They will fill out the forms declaring the car wasn't built with stolen parts. They came to me for this.

Inspection of a new "assembled" car in TX is not the same as your normal annual inspection done at your local Quick Lube. It must be done by an ASE certified master mechanic, and there is special paperwork to be filled out with checklists and space for comments. The inspection report needs a printout of the mechanic's credentials showing current master status.

Go here: http://www.txdmv.gov/publications and click on the Assembled and Rebuilt Vehicle Manual. It's a many step process but I found all involved to be helpful.
