  1. Activity Streams give you a way to find content on a constant basis without having to create a new search every time you visit the forum. The default streams visible when you click Activity are: All Activity, Unread content and Content I have started. You can modify these default streams or you can create custom streams based on your individual needs. All Activity Stream The All Activity stream which is available in the activity menu by default, will give you a rundown of all activity on the forum. You can view this in either a condensed view (one line per item) or the default expanded view you see in the screenshot below. Note: all other streams are set to Condensed view by default, but you can change this by clicking the Expand button. The forum will remember your last selection for each stream. Custom Activity Streams Within the default menu structure, under the Activity menu item, you will see a My Activity Streams option. Here you will see all default activity streams, and also the ability to create your own stream (on a per user basis). When selecting Create New Stream, you will be presented with the filters you wish to use for your new stream. Here a new stream is created for a specific forum on the site. Note you can select the cog icon at the side of any content type to select specific items under that content type. In this instance, a specific forum. Any new streams that are created, are then shown under the My Activity Streams menu, beneath the default set of streams. Editing Existing Streams When viewing any existing streams, you will see a set of filters at the top of the page, which you can change to your liking. Changing these will change the data shown in real time. There may be times where you wish to save a small change to an existing stream. Rather than creating one from scratch. After making an edit to any of the filters, you will see a save button, which will then allow you to create a new stream from your changes.
  2. You can choose to be notified when someone posts to a topic by enabling notifications and then following the topic. Enabling notifications is a one-time setting accessed by clicking on your username at the top right of every page and choosing Account Settings. Then select Notification Settings under Other Settings. And finally under Followed Content select the Email checkbox if you wish to receive your notifications via email, or Notification List if you prefer to hear a sound or have your browser alert you. The final step to receive notifications when someone posts to a topic is to follow the topic. This can be done automatically for all topics you create or reply to by checking the appropriate box under Automatically follow content in the screen above. Alternatively, you can choose to follow specific topics when you create a topic or reply to an existing topic using the Follow topic slider at the bottom left of the editor box where you type your post.

    FAQ

Below are common questions that arise when using the forum. Most of these are also covered in dedicated Help Guides. How do I insert an image from my device to my post? You can either drag the image file to the bottom of the editor box, or click choose files from that same location and find the image on your device. Uploaded images are limited to no more than 20MB. You may upload multiple images per post, but please try to limit this to no more than 5 images to aid readability and keep page length in check. How do I insert an image or embed a video hosted elsewhere? Simply get the URL of the image or video and paste it in the editor box. The software will automatically embed it. Images must be hosted on a secure site (URL starts with https not http.) Special note for users of Microsoft’s Edge browser: The January 2020 release of Edge will by default paste the image or video title rather than the URL address. The workaround to this behavior is to right click > Paste as > Plain text. Why does my photo appear upside down on the forum but right-side up elsewhere? Short answer is because your phone was upside down when you took the picture. Your phone logs meta data in the photo indicating which direction you intended as up. Unfortunately, this information isn't always transferred correctly when a photo is uploaded or emailed, and further, some source systems simply don't know how to read the orientation data. To fix this open your photo in your editing software of choice and rotate the photo at least one full revolution, then save and upload it to the forum. This works most of the time. If your photo is the exception, a quick hack is to use the Snipping tool in Windows to take a screenshot of the photo while it is right side up, then save and upload this new image to the forum. How do I take a photo with my phone right side up? In portrait mode, the lens should be at the top of the phone. In landscape mode, the lens should be at the upper left corner. Why does my .HEIC image appear in a post as a download? Apple's .heic format is unsupported by many forum software packages, including this one. As a result, they come through as attachments which people must download rather than simply view inline within the post. More recent iPhones will automatically convert an .heic to a .jpeg when either uploading it to the forum via a browser or sending it via email. However, it appears that Macs and older iPhones do not perform this conversion and require you to first resave the picture as a jpeg. As a courtesy to other members, if you have attempted to attach an .heic image, please resave it as a jpeg and then insert it into your post. How do I quote a single post? Simply click on the word Quote below the post you wish to quote (do not click the Plus sign to its left). That post will then appear in a light blue box within the editor box at the bottom of the page. If you only wish to only quote part of a post, you can click inside the blue box and remove the unwanted portion. Next, type your reply in the white section of the editor box. immediately below the quoted blue section. How do I quote multiple posts? Click on the Plus symbol next to the word Quote below each of the posts you wish to quote. Once you all the posts are selected, click on the little window that appears in the lower right of the page that shows the number of posts you have quoted. Each quoted post will then appear in their own blue boxes within the editor box at the bottom of the page. Follow the instructions for editing the quotes and posting your response explained in How do I quote a single post? in the FAQ question immediately above this one. How do I preview my post before submitting it? Simply click on the last icon in the editor box (shown circled in red below) How do I edit my post? Click the ellipse in the upper right hand corner of your post (shown circled in red below), then select Edit. Make your changes then click the Edit Topic button. Posts can only be edited within the first 24 hours after submission. If you are past that window and really, really, really need to make an edit, please open a Support Request for assistance. How do I delete my post? Deletion can only be performed by an Administrator, however, you can edit your post within the first 24 hours and remove the content. If there is a reason this is not sufficient, please open a Support Request for further assistance. Why do some threads have a star next to the title and others have a circle? The star indicates it's a thread you are following, while a circle indicates it's one you are not. Clicking either the star or the circle will take you to the first unread post in the thread. How do I Private Message (PM) someone? This are four ways to initiate a PM: Click the envelope icon at the top right of any page, then Compose New button. From a thread, click their username or avatar to access their profile page, then click the Message button at the bottom middle of their cover photo. If you don't want to leave a thread you are currently reading, rather than click on their username or avatar, simply hover the cursor over either one. This will generate a popup window with summary profile information. Click on Message in lower left corner of popup Go to your inbox and click the Compose New button. How do I access my Inbox for Private Messages (PM)? Click the envelope icon at the top right of any page to open the preview window for your inbox. At the bottom of that preview window click on Go to inbox. Why can’t I send a Private Message (PM)? If you are unable to send a PM, either your inbox or the Inbox of the person you are trying to reach is full. When attempting to send a PM to a user whose Inbox is full, you will see an error message in red text under the To field stating "<user> cannot receive messages." If, however, you click Send and nothing happens, then your Inbox is likely full. To check, look for the fill bar at the upper right corner of your Inbox. If it shows you still have space, then please open a support ticket. If it shows you are at 100% as per the screenshot below, you will need to delete messages from your Inbox. Inbox storage limits are 50 messages for Registered Users, and 500 messages for Paid Club Members. How do I find my gallery or the gallery of another member? The fastest way to do this is to go to the user's Profile page. This will default to the Activity tab which shows their most recent posts and content updates. Click the Albums tab next to it and that members albums and gallery images will appear below. To access a specific album, click on either the album title or an image from that album.
  4. To make any changes to your profile, simply click on your user name in the upper right hand corner to open the drop down navigation. From the drop down navigation, select Profile, then click on the areas shown in the screenshot below to change either your Profile (avatar) or Cover Photo. Profile Photo (avatar) Your Profile Photo may not exceed 500kb and must be square. At time of upload, you will be given a chance to click and drag handles to adjust the portion of the image that will be displayed. Cover Photo Your Cover Photo may not exceed 1mb and is displayed as a short, wide image. After upload, you are given the opportunity to reposition the visible portion by clicking and dragging the image vertically. You may reposition the Cover Photo in the future by clicking on the Cover Photo button, then selecting Reposition Photo. Visitors to your Profile page may view the hidden portions of your Cover Photo by clicking on the image. The screenshot below shows a completed profile page with both Profile and Cover Photos.
  5. Just a reminder that the move to the new platform will happen tomorrow starting at 7am PT. The site will be offline for ~6-8 hours as data migrates and the new forum is built. If we hit a snag that will delay completion until Monday, I'll post an update to the Twitter feed provided in my initial post. When you reach the new forum, you will see two orange banners that read "If this is your initial visit to the new forum, please read first!" Please read that first -John
  6. Testing continues to go well and has uncovered a few little items that are easy to fix now that I know what they are and where the settings are hidden. I've confirmed with our hosting provider they can help Sunday morning with a few backend changes necessary to perform the migration. As a result, we are on track for a Sunday move starting at 7am PT. Between site build out and time for all the data to move over, it's about 6-8 hours of work. Provided things go smoothly, we should be back up in time for Sunday evening cocktails. -John
  7. After the new test account changed servers this morning, I was able to complete the test migration. It went well and has inspired confidence for next Sunday's move. Thus far, testing has only revealed a couple of very minor issues. I'll follow up with Invision support on those and will continue testing over the next few days to see what else turns up, but this is a good sign. Two pleasant surprises: given the site is still going through the indexing process: the search is already leagues ahead of what we have with vBulletin. It actually works! The lovely feature that started appearing randomly about 2 months ago where thumbnails the size of the image are automatically embedded (see blow) has self healed in Invision. Here are a few teasers of the new interface using real data. The first two images show one of the Activity Streams (it includes several by default and you can create your own). The first view has the Condensed button selected which just shows one line per thread. The second is the Expanded view that gives a preview of each thread. This next screenshot shows a thread view. When a thread reaches a certain length, the box on the top right is displayed which shows summary thread statistics, including # of replies, top posters, the most active days, and up to 4 photos included within the body of the thread. I hadn't seen this in the demo environment, so need to dig into it more, but there is value for multi-page threads. -John
  8. When planning a release, the disadvantage of full disclosure along the way is slips become very public and can foster a lack of confidence. Well, I'm fostering more of that today After experiencing random issues the past few weeks, we opted to purchase a second account with our hoster. This second account allows us to build a separate environment with PHP 7.1 and test the migration process to Invision without impacting our vBulletin forum. That's proven valuable and exposed few gotchas over the past several days. Gotchas that would have paused the production migration and taken the site down for longer than planned. Nothing major, but annoying nonetheless. Another issue arose Wednesday that is preventing us from completing that test. It's minor, but requires the hoster to move our second environment to another server. Although this is straightforward, vacations on their end means this is taking longer than expected. Rather than roll the dice and hope the server move happens in time for us to complete testing prior to this Sunday's planned migration, we're delaying the full move to next Sunday the 28th. This should give us enough time to reach test complete, identify the new gotchas, and have a smoother migration. Thanks again for your patience. -John
  9. I haven't seen anyone say they aren't coming. I've seen respectful comments questioning both the energy infrastructure's ability to support the planned timelines of the UK government and GM, and the claims of zero emissions given the nature of energy production in many parts of the world coupled with the environmental impact of an electric car's lifecycle. Both valid questions. Most problems are solvable in time, but they first must be recognized as problems. As an alternative to electric propulsion, Porsche plans to trial a synthetic fuel that is backward compatible with exiting ICE powerplants. Might prove too good to be true (start up costs, price to consumer, and production capacity are just a few open questions) but it's an interesting development to watch. Synthetic fuelled cars as clean as electric cars, says Porsche | evo -John
  10. The youtube issue should now be fixed. It turns out that the code was using http when after switching to the new hoster we finally added an SSL certificate and it needed that changed to https. Although power didn't go out yesterday as feared, it did go out for a while this morning while I was working with the hoster on a few items including the above. We're tentative for migrating next Sunday, but I won't be able to confirm until later in the week. -John
  11. And I never thought I would be the first to use it here. -John
  12. The Birkin Mustang is in Groton, CT. See if this link works. If not, go to the search results page that Croc provided and expand the search area from 50 miles from D.C. to 500 miles. The Birkin should then appear above the philodendrons. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/351910812657116/?ref=search&referral_code=undefined -John
  13. We're >8" of snow now with another front set to arrive at 4am, bringing more snow through early afternoon. That means even if power is up tomorrow at 7am, there is a decent chance we could have a power outage or Internet resets later in the day. The conversion tool requires a constant connection during the migration. Any downtime will cause problems, so we are taking the prudent approach and delaying the migration to next Sunday provided that day still works for our primary support person at the hosting provider. Apologies for the false start, but I'd rather not risk unnecessary forum downtime. Thanks, John
  14. Thanks Henry. Can anyone recall seeing a youtube video working since the migration to the new hoster on 1/31? If not, then it's likely related to that migration and I'll open a ticket. It looks like a new link will work (at least in preview), but pulling the video ID from the old links and reformatting them as per the below still results in a video not found error. I suppose this could be a red herring and those specific videos are simply no longer there, but my money is on a bug. -John
  15. I did. They love snow and are built for it. I just tried to embed a short video to prove it, but it didn't work. Hmm... Going back to older posts with embedded youtube videos shows them either missing or replaced by links. Is this a special feature just for me or is everyone seeing this behavior? I checked the help topic I posted as well as a this thread by Croc. Thanks, John
  16. We are getting hit with a snowstorm in the Seattle area. It's expected to continue throughout today with more coming tomorrow morning. Given the soil is very saturated, there is a chance that trees will topple and my power could go out. If that happens, I'll be incommunicado and the migration to Invision will not happen as planned. Check back tomorrow morning shortly after 7am PT. If the site is still up, that's what happened and the migration will move to a future date. If it's offline, then check back later in the day and keep your fingers crossed for no issues. -John
  17. Rumors are that Bessie has an evil stepsister. She could well make an appearance in the future... We are at T-2 for the big move. I'll post another update tomorrow, but want to share a little more information now. With any migration there will be issues ranging from very minor (e.g. some emoticons are broken) to holy-crap-what-the-hell-just-happened? If we hit the latter, and can't easily fix things, we will turn vBulletin back on to keep the forum running while we develop and implement plan B. Assuming we go live Sunday or Monday, I will launch the Invision forum with a thread in the help section that identifies known issues in the initial post and where you can post new issues you’ve discovered which we will track down and fix. One issue to expect is the temporary absence of attachments in posts that migrate over. This is a result of the reindexing process that can take a few days to complete. As it does, attachments will begin to reappear. -John
  18. And if you think that's bad folks, you should have read the original -John
  19. SENC, let's just say that if you noticed the site was a little slower than normal for 30 minutes before that post, it wasn't your imagination. That kind of editing puts a serious tax on our server resources. -John
  20. Nothing that glamorous. I edit all of Croc’s communications to ensure they result in neither litigation, public censure, nor involuntary confinement in a foreign country. He is a prolific writer who rarely sleeps, so it keeps me busy. -John
  21. Compared to my real job, this has been kind of relaxing and slow paced -John
  22. As some of you noticed, the site was offline for about 4 hours yesterday. This was not planned and was due to an issue within our vBulletin code. Our new hosting company identified and corrected it, but it confirmed what we have long suspected; there are underlying code issues that have contributed to the interesting "features" we've randomly experienced over the past few years. The good news is the code base is not something moving over on Sunday and we will be starting fresh. The bad news is that because this randomly cropped up, Murphy's Law dictates there is no guarantee a related issue won't arise before Sunday and cause a repeat. Should that occur, and depending on the severity and effort to fix it, we may make the decision to rip off the band-aid and do the upgrade to Invision at that time. If the site does go down for a few hours before Sunday, please check the Twitter feed provided in Post #1 for an update. Thanks, John
  23. I just added an update to the initial post and repeating it here for awareness. The avatar dimensions (called Profile Photo in Invision) are different than on vbulletin and may look strange depending on the shape and resolution of your current avatar. The good news is that you may use a larger image than on the current forum, with max dimensions of 170x170px and up to 490kb. The downside is that the image must be square. If you use a rectangular photo, it will make you crop it by lopping off the long end. Below is a screen of the actual tool so you can more easily see what I mean. If you have time, you might want to play with a new avatar in preparation for Sunday/Monday. Thanks, John
  24. It's a new feature that started cropping up for some of us a couple of weeks ago. Given we're switching forums in a little over a week, there has been no point investigating why it started happening and potentially introducing more problems. I'm looking forward to a fresh start on a less buggy platform. -John
