I have quite a bit of experience with Rich Kamp (Kampena Motors); he did quite a bit of maintenance work and upgrades on my 1994 Caterham and eventually sold it for me on consignment. I have seen the work he does building new Caterhams in his shop; he is a bit slow but does meticulous work on the builds; I would love to someday have a car that he has built. He is a "one man show" and tends to work at his own pace; "deadlines" usually have a very fluid definition for Rich! He is a very nice guy and knows everything there is to know about Caterham and Lotus cars. I would STRONGLY recommend that you use Rich for your car because getting a Caterham licensed in CA (through the SB 100 program; which allows the car to be licensed and forever smog-exempt) is very tricky and somewhat arbitrary. Rich knows the nuances of the system and some tricks-of-the-trade that can greatly improve your odds of getting it licensed.

I installed the leather Caterham seats (on sliders, so they can be adjusted) and am very happy with them and find them to be very comfortable (I have driven up to 150 miles at a time). The original cloth Caterham bench seat should only be used as an "enhanced interrogation technique" after waterboarding has failed; they are WAY beyond uncomfortable!

Agree with the above comments. Sevens are an irrational passion. I had a 1972 (Series IV) Lotus Seven that I had to sell to return to school; 32 years later I purchased a (used) Caterham because once you have driven/owned a Seven they tend to get into your blood. There is no other car that has the same combination of fun, simplicity, performance, uniqueness and "craziness". As noted above, I think if you purchase a good used Seven at a good price (I am partial to Caterhams and I think they hold their value better), and take good care of it, you could probably sell it after a number of years without taking much of a depreciation hit. Thank you for the incredibly well-documented "incident analysis". As has been noted above, you were "lucky" in some regards, but I doubt that the last few months of pain, hospitals and rehab have felt very "lucky" for you. I suspect that many of us will have a new-found attitude about safety, both on and off the track, and your accident will undoubtedly help prevent and/or minimize injuries for those of us that are willing to take your experience seriously and make some changes going forward. I had excellent luck with Intercity (PA to CA). It was about 30-40% more for enclosed transport (and worth it to me). HIGHLY recommend Intercity.
