Speeding Tickets ...and what cops say...your best story
scannon replied to DB6's topic in General Sevens Discussion
The financial burden only saved me $40. It was not a factor in getting the record changed to show the lower offenses. I didn't have the oxy tank for the first one and was so happy the ADA offered me the deal she did and that I didn't have to go before the judge I accepted the deal and was out of there less than 10 minutes later. I'm certainly not an attorney and you might do well to consult one before you do anything. If it were me, I'd mark not guilty and send in the ticket. Then arrive a bit early for your court date and see if you can plea bargain it down to something lower in points and speed for the record. Good luck, Skip -
I stopped by a race car restoration and repair shop today to have a visit with Nathan Down, formally of RSMC and CC. I walked into the shop to be confronted by a beautiful C type undergoing some mechanical sorting and repairs. Nathan said this was the last C type built. It belongs to Steve Earle who is the founder of the Monterey Classics at Laguna Seca. That's Nathan in the background. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/67604711_DSCN0044.jpg http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/787052054_DSCN0040.jpg The rear clip is hanging on the wall and I forgot to get a picture of it. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1596465870_DSCN0041.jpg http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/2112224549_DSCN0042.jpg http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1962761042_DSCN0043.jpg This one is a little out of focus, sorry about that. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/760673281_DSCN0046.jpg This is an XK 120 engine, in the backgound is a Cad Allard JX2. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1434637343_DSCN0047.jpg

Gert, Thinking about the Bear Tooth Highway got me itching to go drive it again. If the doc says its OK by then, I will head up that way with you from Erie. I might even go on to Utah as I have family there and usually make a summer visit. We'll see how it goes by then. Skip

They first added length to the cockpit to accommodate taller people. Then in the SV they added width as well to accommodate those of us whom are less svelte than we used to be. It also has a wider pedal box which made it possible for me to own one since I couldn't get my right foot past the brake to get to the throttle in the standard width Caterhams. I don't know what SV stands for but Nathan Down who worked at the factory back then and designed the SV said it was originally (and lovingly) called the Fat Bastard. The CSR2XX series is based on the SV frame and regular SVs are also still available. I agree they didn't ruin the shape and style of the classic Series 3 when they made the SV, I really like the look and comfort of mime. Skip BTW, I stopped by Nathan's new job today and found him happily working on the very last C type Jaguar built. He used to work for RMSC but now works in a vintage race car restoration and repair shop in Boulder, CO. I took some pictures of the C type and will post them up later in the off topic section of the forum.

Speeding Tickets ...and what cops say...your best story

Some insurance companies raise them for one ticket, some don't. Since you doubled the speed limit they will probably come down hard on you. In Colorado, if you are 20 or more mph over the limit you have to appear in court, they won't let you mail in the fine. This is a good thing as when you get to court, you have a conversation with the assistant DA and if you have a reasonable DMV record he/she will most likely offer you half the points and a lesser violation to go on your record. My last two tickets were 81/55 and 86/45. The first one dropped it to 70/55 and knocked the points from 6 to 3. The second one changed it from speeding to failure to yield and did the same reduction on points. Total fine and court costs for the first was $145 and the second was $130. Well worth the time to appear in court. I didn't have to go in front of the judge on the first one but the judge in the second one wanted to chew my butt a bit. I had been watching others going in front of him asking for hardship reductions in their fines so when it was my turn after he had finished chewing on me he asked what I had to say for myself. I told him I was on long term disability, had taken a 40% pay cut (all true) and pointed to my oxygen tank hanging on my shoulder. He knocked $40 off the fine. Skip -
Yep, BTDT :yesnod:

Thanks Dave, now I can feel good about attacking it with a die grinder. Skip

Here's a motorcycle called The Heretic Ti. It costs a mere $140,000 and comes with a titanium frame, carbon fiber wheels and much more.

There are two small tubes welded on the gas tank support frame of my Caterham SV about 2" forward of the rear body panel. It they are not used for anything then I am going to remove the one on the driver side to get a little more clearance for my exhaust. The picture shows the exhaust system prior to some restructuring I had done last week to raise it for ground and tire clearance. Now the tips are very close to the tube and if it doesn't have a purpose, I want to remove the one on the exhaust side. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1721483815_gas tank boss.jpg Thanks for the help, Skip

Hi Mike, Welcome aboard the forum. Great looking car, I'm just slightly biased towards Caterham SVs I can't help you out with the engine specs but I'm sure someone on here can or you could contact Caterham USA, they *might* have the specs on record if the engine was purchased from them. Skip

They may be more expensive but none of them is any more serious (and fun) a sports car than a Se7en. Skip

ATTENTION-MAJOR UPDATE FOR 2009 EVENT!!!
scannon replied to sparecr's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Since the event has been combined with LOG29, the track day moved to Barber. Check the bottom of the schedule Skip -
Gert, Looks like a sizable loop. I highly suggest that after RM Nat'l Park you head south to I-70, exit I-70 at Copper Mountain and head to Leadville. Then take Independence Pass over to Aspen, then there are several ways to reconnect with your route. Independence Pass is a joy to drive and spectacular scenery. It tops out at a little over 12,000'. Early mornings during the week is the best time for a spirited drive. Skip

Gert, Bring on the Se7ens crowd, I can accommodate quite a few if some of them don't mind air beds on the floor of the shop. I'm having shoulder surgery next Thursday. Two tendons have detached and the muscle has pulled them back about 2". I was expecting a 3 - 4 month recovery but the doc says count on a year before I can hoist my body in and out of the Caterham cockpit. Even without the shoulder problem, long trips are not possible in the Se7en as I have to take along my oxygen supply and there just isn't room for the LOx tank in there. Long trips in the Se7en involve the Silverado and the trailer. I have a small tire trailer for the Miata that has a mount on it for the LOx tank. Getting old sucks. Skip

I asked about this when making my reservation at the hotel. They have secure parking for attendees (at $9 per day) and "a lot across the street" for trailers and those who do not wish to pay for the more convenient parking. I will be towing my Caterham in an enclosed trailer and plan to use it as my secure garage during the event. Skip

Gert, You are coming very close to my place and you and your wife are invited to stay over at my home. I live in Erie, CO, about 45 minutes south of the east entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park. Lots and lots of twisty canyons around here to enjoy, even some good scenery. As the time gets closer I may decide to join you for part of the tour although it will likely be in my Miata rather than the Caterham. I don't think the doc is going to allow me to drive it again for about a year. But he thought I could probably drive the Miata in about 6 months. Skip

ATTENTION-MAJOR UPDATE FOR 2009 EVENT!!!
scannon replied to sparecr's topic in General Sevens Discussion
That's a pretty safe bet, Elises outnumbered Se7ens by about 3 - 1 at LOG27. It looked like there were more Elises and their permutations than any other model. But we can hope that adding our contingent will make it more even. Skip -
How about: LUV4A7 or LUVMY7 Skip with ONABLAT plates.

The mirror sits flush with the top of the windshield frame so it obscures about an inch of the upper windshield. I find I have to look up to use the mirror and have never felt like it was blocking my forward vision. However, I am 5' 9" tall and it may be a problem for taller folk. Looks wise, I find it neither fugly nor beautiful, it's just functional and I like the look and less drag of not running side mirrors. I had SPA mirrors on the car for awhile but they were so small as to be mostly useless for me. I left the standard Caterham center mirror on for awhile after mounting the new mirror, sort of like training wheels while I got used to using the new mirror. Skip
