We Win!- Track Car Comparison in EVO
scannon replied to seschm1234's topic in General Sevens Discussion
A lot of the British vendors give a VAT included price and a price without VAT as when they ship outside of England they do not have to add the VAT. -
I think some Caterham owners have removed their heaters. Maybe a request to buy one of those in the parts for sale/wanted area of the forum might find one. After that it should be a bolt in modification.

We got to see bits of this on the regular coverage. This is from the company that makes the cameras. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAVIhH8CyAM

Taber, Great to hear your car is almost whole again. On my '04 there are two holes in the lower part of the nose cone opening and two slots in the upper part. The grille goes into the two bottom holes and then the slots. There are two metal spring clips that close the slots. Not a very good system, it lets the grille rattle around a bit. I'll get a picture next time I am in the shop and post it here. Added some pictures showing the clips. My car has both a mesh grille and the 7 emblem grille. I added some safety wire to the clips to make sure they stayed in place.

I saw the BMW diffs in a number of cars at Caterham USA this summer and was told the Sierra diffs are no longer available new. The good part is they use an adapter to bolt right in in place of the Sierra diff so if you need a replacement down the road just find a junkyard with a 1 series or order a new one from from BMW and buy the adapters from Caterham. I don't remember if it takes different halfshafts and driveshaft.

I believe that until recently the deDion cars used the Ford Sierra differential. My '04 came with an open Sierra diff and I added a Quaiffe LSD to it. The Ford Sierra diff has been superseded with the BMW 1 series differential.

One of our own is on an extended vacation in Europe. In his blog he writes about visiting the Caterham factory. http://savagemythology.com/ His other adventures and great photography are below the factory visit.

Drive a Se7en and have a blast. It will elevate your adrenaline.

Jack up the engine to get it correctly aligned, tack weld it in place then pull it out and take it to a welding shop for the serious welding. Be sure to disconnect the battery before welding on the car.

Where do you rest your left foot?
scannon replied to transalpian's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I'm quite comfortable with my left foot under the clutch once I am in 5th gear and up to speed. I have installed cruise control so I can take my right foot off the throttle and move it back a bit and rest my knee against the transmission tunnel. That makes for very comfortable long distance cruising. -
Is the leather touching the cockpit anywhere? Leather can squeak if it rubs on other leather, vinyl, metal, etc. It could be where the seat back touches the bottom cushion. I've had this problem in other cars. Cleaning and treating it with Lexol helps and is good for the leather.

I put some pictures of the mechanicals as well as a couple with the Baby Miata, an RC converted pedal car. The front suspension on the Baby 7 is functional and can be adjusted for tow in and camber but not castor. There is no rear suspension, just a 1" shaft riding in bearings mounted to the frame. http://s1261.photobucket.com/user/scannon929/library/Baby%207

Once I figure out the trailer hitch for the Caterham the Baby 7 will come along on some trips. Since there is no weather gear and my head and neck are above the roll bar there won't be a top made for it, it won't be doing any solo trips. I am going to look at getting it street legal, possibly as one of those vehicles limited to 45 mph streets like the golf carts you see in some retirement communities. In the not too distant future I will be looking into replacing the engine with a motorcycle engine and transmission. I think 25 - 30 HP should be sufficient. It wouldn't make a good dinghy, it won't float. But I could adapt the Butt Extractor to lift it on and off the rear deck. Here's a picture of a friend driving the Baby 7. Does it look like he is having a great time?

I took possession this morning. It is not finished but the rest is up to me. It will be painted to match my Caterham and I will have to wire up the lights and some other details need attention. I drove it up and down my street for awhile then spent some time adjusting the brake and throttle pedals. A couple of friends showed up and took some laps of the neighborhood as well. The runway in our airpark was closed this afternoon to put new threshold stripes and runway numbers on and I got permission from the HOA prez to make some runs on the 4,500' landing strip. The prez also took a lap in the car. The steering is extremely quick, 1/3rd turn lock to lock and the grip seems very good on the generic implement tires. The gearing is wrong and the engine lugs a long time getting up to speed and into its power band. I am getting a larger sprocket for the axle that should cure that problem. Everyone who drove it came back with a big grin on their face, "what a hoot" was the most common comment.

Oh FFS! Simon Cowell has bought a Caterham
scannon replied to Croc's topic in General Sevens Discussion
A confidential source told me today that the car in the article does not belong to Simon. I couldn't pry any other details out of the source. I think Croc must have loaned him his car for a test drive. Fess up Mike, Cowell is apparently in the process of ordering one so perhaps he will get the 620R. -

Did he have A/C, P/S, navigation and a host of other luxury options installed? -
Taber, That's great to hear, looking forward to seeing the finished car. I get lots of feedback about the bear story.
-
That's a lot stouter framing and more of it under there than in my Caterham.
-
It looks like I could use the empty bolt holes on the bottom of the Sierra differential to take the fore and aft loads but like Gert points out the framing of the boot at the bottom is pretty light weight tubing to support the tongue weight. The diff has the two extra struts so the additional load should not be a problem
